  • Music News Round-Up
Did everyone have a good long weekend? I spent mine camping with my family in the rain. Next to a tent that almost exclusively played dubstep and another who had a baby. Never again. Anyway, here’s some music news to accompany your hangover.   After one album and countless drummers, Philadelphia Grand Jury have called

  • News: Philadelphia Grand Jury Officially ‘Br ..
After three years and four drummers , Sydney party starters Philadelphia Grand Jury are no more. The band announced their split an hour ago via Facebook: “After years of touring together, recording together, working together and living together, we've decided we need our own space. Big, big thanks to everyone who has supported us and given us the opportunity to have what is pretty much a dream existence. Most of all, thanks to all the drummers that have put up with us both.” Formed by childhood friends Simon “Berkfinger” Berckelman and Joel Beeson (aka MC Bad Genius), with a revolving ...

  • News: Perth’s One Movement Cancelled
The pin has been pulled indefinitely on Perth’s One Movement Music Festival. Organisers were forced to postpone the event in April, but financial losses of more than $2 million and a lack of commercial sustainability have lead to the event’s cancellation, The Age online reported yesterday (June 24). "Whilst we are disappointed that a commercially sustainable model could not be found moving forward for the event, One Movement is very proud of what was achieved in its inaugural and second year for artists, the industry and the City of Perth," read a joint statement from promoters Sunset Events ...

Songs about friendship, death and the unpronounceable chemical released into your brain when you fall in love – The Paper Scissors’ JAI PYNE (vocals/guitar), XAVIER NAUGHTON (bass) and IVAN LISYAK (drums) lead us through their second album ‘In Loving Memory’. ‘Disco Connect’ Jai: I think we've been afraid of funk before and it has negative connotations because everyone was name checking Television and avoiding James Brown like the plague, but we aren't afraid. Ivan: I think a lot of bands just take themselves too seriously, and they don’t know when it’s OK to have fun. We ...

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Passion Pit, The Postal Service, Yeasayer "We Say Bamboulee - Solid Gold" What's so good? My New Year’s resolution was to start turning up to gigs for the support acts. Many times I find myself uninterested (or my resolution just fails altogether), but every now and then I am presented with a gem. We Say Bamboulee is one of these gems. An eBay battle for a new Roland Alpha Juno 2 synthesizer was the catalyst for the creation of We Say Bamboulee. After losing the online skirmish, Doug Wright (whose brother ...

  • In the Post #71: Sounds Like Brisbane
Last year, thanks to Philadelphia Grand Jury and the Paper Scissors, I was convinced Australia was yet another untapped, rich musical resource that was just waiting to be discovered. (And I’m not just talking about the Temper Trap‘s quick rise to fame when I say this.) Sounds Like Brisbane is a collective of labels from that Western town in Australia that have chosen to band together for marketing and promotional efforts, with the main goal... • Hung Jury
Philadelphia Grand Jury (pictured) have allegedly split up, with drummer Susie Patten   (also of I Heart Hiroshima ), now looking at ways to release a solo album seeing as she has no more PGJ commitments. The word from the band’s reps in Melbourne is that “we’re not saying the band’s broken up, but they’re not going ahead with their next album.” Read into that what you will!

  • News: I Heart Hiroshima Return
A year after going on hiatus, I Heart Hiroshima will regroup for shows in Melbourne, Sydney and their native Brisbane. The band decided to take a break in January last year following drummer Susie Patten’s defection to Berlin. And while Patten has been touring with Philadelphia Grand Jury – she’s recently signed on as drummer #4 – a stint back in Australia has paved the way for some upcoming reunion shows. The band played their last show – a two-hour set covering both albums, 2007’s Tuff Teef and 2009’s The Rip – at Brisbane’s Powerhouse on January 24. Photos ...
