  • Andrew Paul Regan - John Frum Will Return ..
You should know Andrew Paul Regan if you're a regular STN reader, it's an anagram of his real name Pagan Wanderer Lu (subs pls check). The Signal And The Noise is his new album, out June 4th on home of the hits Brainlove, and he writes a bit about it over yonder . Using the tale of Vanuatuan folk hero John Frum and the belief in mythology and belief against reality, it's a very fine return to his broken toy electronic anti-pop roots which heads from summery oddness to a circuit bending disco frenzy. John Frum Will Return ...

What a great uncouth name. This latest addition to the Brainlove travelling carney show is Joel Midden of Chicago, whose work throws together samples, odd polyrhythmic percussion, processed vocals and, as his primary weapon of choice, kalimba. On this cut from an album released here on the 30th the African thumb piano is pressed into tinkly, starry, musical box-type loops as above it things go not unlike TV On The Radio in the barber shop harmonies at multiple octaves over undulating carefully outlain atmospheric obliqueness. Midden is in the country from Sunday, where he's at the Norwich Playhouse Bar ...

  • A grand day out: Brainlove Festival
So to the first in an occasional series this spring not quite summer. We know some people don't have the staying power or will to sleep on soil (and that's just those booked into Travelodges, ho ho) to do festivals, and we're aware that a lot of people don't find multi-venue city roustelays of the Camden Crawl/Great Escape type agreeing with them as they can only get normal wristbands and hence get crowded out of all venues below O2 size by A&Rs.; Instead, let us recommend festivals that take place in one or two days ...

  • It was a very good year
Some quick notices of releases for the last month of the year by two artists that made this here albums of the year countdown. Firstly, Pagan Wanderer Lu's last release, he says, for a while is Pervert Oven ("I burned my hand on my oven at home. I wanted to get my revenge on the oven so I drew a picture of it wearing a raincoat and exposing itself like a pervert"), a pay what you want lo-fi curio of songs that didn't fit, songs that were too odd even for a PWL album, The Great British Public ...

  • Sweeping The Nation Albums Of 2010: Number 2 ..
The label bumf describes European Monsoon as Pagan Wanderer Lu's most accessible album yet, only for it to refer to itself as "a few hundred megabytes in iTunes no-one will ever listen to" over buzzing bass frequencies. Yeah, this is still on a scale that doesn't take radio friendly unit shifting into account. It's still the same socio-political lyrics over broken lo-fi DIY electronica it pretty much always was, variously tackling apathy, right wing bigotry, a lack of self-opinion, love as science and technology bringing us down, all over disco bleeps, non-disco bleeps, rickety guitar, knackered analogue ...

  • MANCHESTER GIGS IN MUSIC: October 2010 Pt.1 ..
Well I could spend a para or so bemoaning how busy “Rocktober” is for gigs and festivals in Manchester. But why waste breathe with so much going on? And it all kicks off this Friday evening with the highly recommended double-bill of Shrag and Standard Fare at Kraak Gallery (but you read this week’s interview with Emma and Dan of SF didn’t you?) plus at least SIX other gigs too tonight. And this is before we get to the not-one-but-two 3-day industry shindigs Unconvention and In The City this month. Or the one-dayers like Rowf Rowf Rowf or ...

  • Always Check The Label: Brainlove
Next up, Brainlove Records , marking out their territory since 2003 in offbeat, largely DIY alterna-weird pop. Four of their finest - Napoleon IIIrd, Pagan Wanderer Lu, Stairs To Korea and Mat Riviere - start a label tour tonight, part of which is our night at Leicester Firebug on Friday, and we expect to see you there. John Brainlove gave us the requisite answers: Why start a label? In our case it was because the quality of the music we were being sent to review on the old Brainlove 'zine was so abjectly low. We knew people in better bands who'd never ...
