  • Giacomo Merega, Noah Kaplan, Marco Cappelli ..
Italian electric bassist Giacomo Merega once again gets together with saxophonist Noah Kaplan and guitarist Marco Cappelli for a set of rhythm-less free form improvisations Watch the Walls Instead. A follow up to the light and other things (2008), this trio is only actually a trio for five of the twelve tracks; Anthony Coleman joins them on piano for seven [...]

  • ONE TO WATCH: Lydia Baylis
Underground Sounds by Tim Osbourne Tim Osbourne is a Music writer in the UK. He covers emerging artists for rslblog.com Lydia Baylis has made an early career out of building powerful and anthemic folk-ridden tracks that can seamlessly resonate with most everyone. Lyrically, she is challenging and provocative, but the material this artist comes out with is still absolutely and completely accessible for fans of modern indie music. Indeed, one of the most impressive things about the artist is how closely she holds her musical influences to the heart. The “raw-ness” of Van Morrison is definitely present, alongside the ...

  • Neneh Cherry & The Thing tour as a bright sp ..
The odd couple pairing of free jazz maestros The Thing (Mats Gustafsson on saxophone, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten on double bass, Paal Nilssen-Love on drums, percussion, and sampler) and dance pop maven Neneh Cherry is hitting the road to promote their forthcoming LP, The Cherry Thing , out June 18 on Smalltown Supersound! After two initial shows in Stockholm on May 17, the collaborative foursome are set to take a host of club spaces and festivals by storm. Given the band’s limited time spent together rehearsing, let alone playing together at all, they should make for pretty interesting engagements. So how ...

  • Ornette ‘Crazy’ (Phonique Remix)
Get Physical has always been synominous with acts like Booka Shade, M.A.N.D.Y and DJ T - but with those acts taking a back seat for the time being - it's good to see some of the other family members getting some much needed attention.

  • Tower Records x Stussy x Coleman 2012 Summer ..
Having already linked once with Tower Records and Coleman last year, Stussy again joins to align the trio once again for a Summer 2012 lifestyle capsule collection. The collection again boasts a military-inspired theme donning an all-over-print camouflage pattern, except this time the motif is treated in a vibrant yellowish orange colorway. Reflecting the first [...] Read more at Hypebeast.com

  • The Golden Boys
Dirty Fingernails is the 5th album by Austin's beer-drenched rockers The Golden Boys , and by all accounts is their greatest to date. Skillfully documented by engineer Mike Vasquez, it's the rock'n'roll album for persons who long ago gave up on that sort of thing. The Golden Boys' current lineup consists of Wesley">John Wesley Coleman III, Bryan Schmitz, Patrick Travis, Matthew Hoopengardner and Ney Ney Arbeitman. You can see The Golden Boys on June 16 at Austin's Scottish Rite Theatre, supporting Quintron and Miss Pussycat.

  • The Plant Kingdom: Don't Sit Under The Apple ..
The Coleman Hawkins Quartet : Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree [ purchase ] Swing.  A simple enough word; evocative, though perhaps overused.  Still, sometimes the obvious is the only appropriate destination and this track is a case in point.  Hawk and his band wind up and let loose with glee, turning a twee old Andrews Sisters ditty into something somehow other . And while apple trees are as far removed from smoky New Jersey studios as one could possibly imagine, the fit is natural: the tenor sax locates the lasciviousness of the missing lyric, winks knowingly and invites us to join it ...

Continuing our series of monthly columns, John Fordham picks out his musical milestones from the past few weeks. Tell us in the comments section below if there's things we've missed, plus what you'd like to see John covering in next month's column 1) An anniversary: Herbie Hancock's Takin' Off Thanks to those who posted comments on last month's Take Five – including nilpferd's suggestion that Herbie Hancock's 1962 Blue Note debut Takin' Off would make a fitting 50th anniversary classic for May. I couldn't agree more. Chicago-raised Hancock was just 22 when ...

  • NENEH CHERRY & THE THING

Also lifted from the record is their rhythm and horns version of ‘Dream Baby Dream’ by Suicide. • Benevento, Martin and Wood – Dream Pairing i ..
Last night at the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn, HT faves Medeski, Martin and Wood brought many of their musical friends out for a show billed as “ Medeski, Martin and Wood + ? ” as part of the Undead Festival. The inventive three-set format featured the trio improvising in the first set, guests replacing members of the trio in the second set and guests joining MMW in the third set. According to our pal Jeremy Welsh , the second set started off with Anthony Coleman replacing John Medeski, continued with Oren Bloedow sitting in for Chris Wood followed by Calvin Weston covering Billy Martin’s ...
