  • The Friday MP3 Shuffle #143
Would it surprise you to learn that I'm quite pleased with this week's mix? It's not hubris if you really are as brilliant as you think you are. It starts off quite rocky and punky, and gets heavier and stonerier towards the end. I'm pretty sure "stonerier" is a word. A big glowing highlight is Year of the Goat's Dark Lord , one of very best songs of last year. It's almost too good. So good I had no choice but put it last because it wouldn't be fair to any song to have ...

  • Here Comes Honk!
Going Out This Weekend by Julie Stoller HONK! Festival 2011 Festival of Activist Street Bands (all events public - most are free) Running through Oct 3, 2011 This is a Rain or Shine Event! What Cheer? Brigade - Malaguena photo by 5342 Studios [ full album ] I had the great pleasure last year, out for an evening’s stroll around Davis Square, to run quite accidentally into the HONK! Festival. This was not your standard high school marching band fare. First it was a wild avant-garde cacophony of horns blaring from a street corner with a big crowd gathered around. Then a Klezmer-esque ...

  • Ears Wide Open: Hand
The debut EP from Hand is titled “Antiquities,” and it is in no way disparaging to point out that it feels like a museum piece. The work of L.A. songwriter Eric J. McEntee stokes the fires kindled by ’70s folk and pop song artists whose lush, clarion songs are easy on the ears, if hard [...]

Let me just paste in the tags. “ambient blisstronica electronica hypnagogic pop laptop music”… I guess this covers a few bases. Take opener ‘Open Hand’. Ambient it ain’t. It’s more like Gene Krupa teamed up with a 56K modem. There are short snippets of tracks like ‘A Gentle WAV’, whose title is better than the [...]

  • David Wilcox -Reverie
[ purchase ] I’ve heard songs by David Wilcox over the years, and I reviewed his last album, Open Hand . But the new album, Reverie, marks the first time I have heard him in mostly a solo setting. There is percussion on One Way to Find Out, and the title track has, I believe, three other musicians on it, but the rest is just Wilcox and his guitar. Over the course of fourteen songs, that could have been a long album. So the great revelation for me here is just how good a guitar player Wilcox is. He displays a great ...

  • Open Hand – Live And Let Die (Live)
Open Hand was formed in Hollywood in 1999 by guitarist/vocalist Justin Isham, bassist Michael Anastasi and drummer Alex Rodriguez. Determined to escape the confines of hardcore, the early incarnation of the band tempered its frantic riffing with lush melodies, intricate instrumental passages and a keen sense of dynamics. Open Hand quickly built a massive buzz [...]

I like third albums. They’ve got a certain revelatory character about them. They’re not always the best records of an artist’s career (although they often are), but from them you can begin to see the outline of that career — a template for the triumphs yet to come, or the harbinger of the inevitable downfall. • Album Review: Lecarla - Silent City
On a night when Kerrang! once again completely misjudged who to nominate and award their ‘prized’ gongs to by missing countless up and coming British bands, new boys and girls Lecarla can sit safe in the knowledge that perhaps by next year their name could be being bandied about in contention. For those who like their female fronted rock to fit somewhere between the twee faux-rock stylings of Paramore and the operatic tosh of Lacuna Coil, Lecarla find a middle ground in some sort of mix between early Four Year Strong and Matchbook Romance. Immediate stand outs are lead single ...
