Of Montreal

Of Montreal

Canada

Of Montreal is an indie pop/rock band from Athens, Georgia. Kevin Barnes created the band, allegedly naming it for a failed romance with a woman from Montreal. Barnes was the only member of the "group" prior to his relocation to Athens, Georgia. There, he met Derek Almstead (Circulat... Read More

  • Hear Zeds Dead's Sabi Remix, Get Tour Dates ..
Toronto-based duo Zeds Dead have (not so quietly) become a formidable presence in the EDM and bass music scene, and starting in a few days they'll be launching a supersize tour designed by the folks responsible for Deadmau5 and Skrillex’s eye-popping spectacles. The "Living Dead Bus Tour" teams the crew with our boy Araabmuzik and Omar Linx. To celebrate, Zeds Dead have released a remix of "Wild at Heart" by Sabi, the Britney Spears collaborator who most recently appeared on a hit Cobra Starship track. It sounds like Rihanna getting a crash course at Dubstep University, which is ...

  • of Montreal: Pulling Off the Mask
The key track on Paralytic Stalks , the new of Montreal album, is “Ye, Renew the Plaintiff.” This nearly nine-minute epic moves through seven separate sections as if descending through the layers of singer/songwriter Kevin Barnes’ despair.

  • Dour Percentage on Fallon
There was a lot of anticipation prior to of Montreal's return to Fallon, after their July 2010 rendering of Sex Karma (quite possibly the only time they performed it with Solange, too). It had set the tone for what the beginning of the False Priest tour was going to look and sound like, and considering the beautiful visuals they had with them this time around, one can only hope that this two-story stage setup and the little square screens and human screens are going on tour with them around the world. Enjoy! Just for the hell of it, here ...

  • Of Montreal, Dr. Dog Lead Late-Night Psych-O ..
Last night's late-TV lineup included two contrasting approaches to psychedelic rock, as Of Montreal returned to Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and Dr. Dog stopped by Conan . It takes a while for Kevin Barnes and the crew's performance to get suitably trippy, but stay with it. After playing on the show with Solange Knowles a couple of years ago, this time the Athens, Georgia-based band offered up a full-fledged rendition of bleakly catchy "Dour Percentage," from latest album Paralytic Stalks (which Barnes broke down track by track for us). Barnes has said the song is about essentially breaking ...

  • Paralytic Stalks
On dance-prog epic "Ye, Renew the Plaintiff," of Montreal freak-genius Kevin Barnes nearly screams himself hoarse: "I'm desperate for something, but there's no human word for it/I should be happy, but what I feel is corrupted, broken, impotent, and insane."

  • Album Review: of Montreal
of Montreal, founded by Kevin Barnes, has gone through a bit of a transformation since their/his start in 1996. Beginning as a twee-pop group and cycling through members and sounds until Kevin Barnes' was left to muse his way toward experimental-glamour, of Montreal's newest project, Paralytic Stalks, is a much different approach to their previous style.

Barnes' battle with masochism seems to have beat him on this project, but that doesn't mean the album is a complete failure.

  • Two new interviews and Fallon tomorrow night ..
Consequence of Sound just published a two-page interview with Kevin Barnes in which you'll learn interesting facts about the songwriting process behind Paralytic Stalks, along with the usual stuff about the live show and how to earn a living as a musician these days. To see what the stage set-up will look like, head over to facebook where Kevin posted a video teaser last Saturday. Clash Music also published an article that mainly focuses on Sufjan Stevens's Age of Adz. Most blogs and papers have published their reviews now, and not only is it way too hard to ...

  • of Montreal: Paralytic Stalks
Paralytic Stalks , the eleventh album by Athens, GA-based of Montreal, does not suffer from lack of ambition. The length — just under an hour for nine songs, the first five of which take up only twenty minutes — gives the band's centrifuge, Kevin Barnes, ample time to stretch his musical legs, and stretch he does.

  • Wintered Debts: of Montreal
It begins with one, solitary mp3. ‘Wintered Debts’ arrived in our Inboxes, RSS Feeds and news streams last year, an eight minute – eight minute – long cross section of the new of Montreal album. Far from blog ready fodder, ‘Wintered Debts’ was at once immediate and confounding, with Kevin Barnes veering away from the plastic funk of ‘False Priest’ and towards something less accessible. Now lingering on the ClashMusic stereo, parent album ‘Paralytic Stalks’ is a work of tremendous contradictions – more complex but less abstract, less melodic but increasingly contagious, the album is an imposing, fascinating beast. “With ‘Paralytic Stalks’ I ...

  • Music: Music Review: Of Montreal: Paralytic ..
Since 2007’s ambitious, masterful Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? , absorbing an Of Montreal album has become a feat akin to eating Thanksgiving dinner for four—then going out for fusion tacos. There’s a lot to take in. Paralytic Stalks finds frontman Kevin Barnes once again attempting to exorcise his personal demons through a dizzying pop whirlwind. It’s a further refinement of his defiantly complex sound, which this time reconciles the naiveté of his ’60s psych-pop roots with his recent post-Prince sex jams.  The hi-fi sonic retrofitting that producer Jon Brion gave False Priest extends here, though ...
