  • The Chevin - "Drive" [Music Video]
Yorkshire-based rockers The Chevin are excited to release their newest music video for their newest single "Drive." Directed by Tyler Oliver (Feature film "Forget Me Not", The Bravery video "Unconditional"), the video is a post-modern tour de force, dripping in nostalgia with vintage footage of marching bands and classic cars juxtaposed with plenty of colorful electric light effects, with plenty of jittery editing. The overall effect is positively disorienting, but the music of "Drive" keeps the viewer grounded even as the voice of lead singer Coyle Girelli reaches soaring heights typically reserved for Roy Orbison or a young Bono.

  • 'The Stuff of Legend': The Afghan Whigs Debu ..
Still the best thing out of Cincinnati since the ‘70s Reds. Newsday : It was the stuff of legend. Regardless of how the surprising reunion of the Afghan Whigs turns out, their show last night at the Bowery Ballroom will go down as the ‘90s alt-rock heroes’ greatest concert ever. It’s not that the Whigs’ singer-guitarist Greg Dulli, bassist John Curley and guitarist Rick McCollum were perfect in their first concert together in 13 years, they were – not to get all Oprah about it – their best selves. The impressive two-hour show delivered on the promising concept the band began 25 ...

  • The Cult: Choice of Weapon
Law suits, break-up, reunion, a hiatus and another reunion. The Cult have survived it all. Founding members Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy have persevered over the years. Few bands can get way with sounding pretty much the same over the decade, but The Cult can. Their new album Choice of Weapon has their signature guitar sound and the current rhythm section is a rumbling freight train. Astbury's voice may have lost a bit of hits reach, but has retained the dark overtones and anger that made them a household name since the mid-Eighties. Produced by Bob Rock, Choice of ...

  • Musical Pairings: Frank Ocean – nostalgia, U ..
For a relatively new artist without a debut record to his name, Ocean">Frank Ocean certainly has managed to attract a lot of attention. Unfortunately, it’s not all been good. For example, he’s already been threatened with a lawsuit by The Eagles’ Don Henley if he so much as performs the track “American Wedding” live because [...]

Introducing the Hemo DJ’s, a young Helsinki based dj/producer duo. They just released a new remix to the Kris Menace’s song ”We Are”. It’s hella good and brings back some heavy music nostalgia of the early 1990s. Be sure to stay … Continue reading →

  • The Playlist Interview From Cannes: Wes Ande ..
Few filmmakers have a more distinctive take on the world than Wes Anderson. Many of his contemporaries -- David O. Russell, Darren Aronofsky, Spike Jonze, et al. -- are extraordinary filmmakers, but it's only with Anderson that you can look at a single frame -- any frame -- and instantly know that it's his. And the same is true of his latest, "Moonrise Kingdom," which marks his return to live-action filmmaking for the first time in five years. The film was very well received when it opened the Cannes Film Festival last week (including our A-grade review), and we caught up with ...

  • Swedish Death Metallers ENTRAILS Ink a Deal ..
Metal Blade is proud to announce the signing of Entrails, one of the best Death Metal bands ever to come out of Sweden! Entrails formed in the 90s, but split up before they were able to release a demo or even an album. It took them until 2008 to come back when guitarist Jimmy Lundqvist rediscovered some old tapes. In a moment of nostalgia he decided that they deserved to be released as they should have been originally. With modern recording technology, the first Entrails demo could finally take shape. After releasing another demo in 2009 Entrails recorded and released ...

  • 'Glee' Recap: So Long, Farewell
That "Goodbye" trended towards maudlin was not unexpected; it was graduation after all But with a few exceptions (three words Burt Hummel Beyoncé) the episode was a nonstop sapfest of too many tears and not enough nostalgia And when all is said and done we were right back where we...

  • Nick Waterhouse :: Time’s All Gone
Nick Waterhouse is a man working a sound rooted in the early Soul and R&B; that once piped out of the cathouses, clubs and dancehalls from coast to coast in pre-Beatles America. But forget nostalgia, the seam Waterhouse is working is a far cry from any kind of prefabricated ‘retro’ trip — this is happening [...]

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia: We’re breaking the ‘Goin’ Old School’ rules a little today by featuring tracks we’ve featured before and tracks that aren’t strictly ‘80’s, but in celebration if the late, great, Bob Moog’s birthday, here’s some of our [...]

  • Spector Line Up Album Details
London newcomers Spector are set to release new album ‘Enjoy It While It Lasts’ on August 13th. Woe betide any band labelled as 'indie's great hope'. The tag is poisonous for anyone it lands upon - just ask Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong, or countless other newcomers shattered by hype. So it's perhaps with a nod and a wink that Spector have named their debut album 'Enjoy It While It Lasts'. Due for release on August 13th, it follows near 12 months of feverish gigs, exciteable reviews and - naturally - plentiful hype. A note from Fred Macpherson to explain ...

It’s people’s insatiable appetite for nostalgia (and the money it potentially generates) that inevitably leads to put-on-a-happy-face reunions, half-hearted posthumous releases and, well, Hologram Tupac and Optical Illusion Freddie Mercury (sigh)....
