For fans of Australian helmer John Hillcoat, it’s been a long wait since his last film, the adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel “The Road” in 2009. However, it looks like patience has paid off with his latest film, “Lawless,” which tells the tale of the Depression-era Bondurant brothers whose successful bootlegging operation in Franklin County, Virginia is soon threatened by authorities who are looking to cut their profits. Based on the novel “The Wettest County In the World” (which the film was originally titled), written by Matt Bondurant—grandson of one of the main characters in the novel ...

  • Nick Cave & Friends’ Lawless Soundtrack
Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, and director John Hillcoat have a flawless track record collaborating on music for film so far, but for their latest project, Lawless, Cave and Co. may have outdone themselves. Where The Road and The Proposition leaned heavily on moody, Cave/Ellis-penned instrumentals, the music of Lawless is rife with guest performers and inspired cover song [...]

By now you know it boasts an incredible cast including Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska, Gary Oldman, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke. You also know that the score was written by longtime Hillcoat collaborators ...

  • “Sentimentality & Brute Violence”: Nick Cave ..
While many still know Nick Cave best for his work as a musician in groups like The Birthday Party, and especially for albums such as Let Love In and Tender Prey that he produced along with his band The Bad Seeds, Cave has become increasingly more visible in the world of cinema ever since he first started collaborating with filmmaker John Hillcoat on the helmer’s 1988 feature “Ghosts…of the Civil Undead.” That pairing has proved to be a lucrative one, as Cave went on to write the grisly Australian Neo-Western “The Proposition” for Hillcoat to direct, which has ...

Twenty fours months and a hot new producer can change everything. It had names like Shia Labeouf, Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johnasson and Michael Shannon attached, but circa January 2010, John Hillcoat's "Lawless," then known as "The Wettest County" or "The Promised Land" had fallen apart.  But thanks to Megan Ellison's fledgling Annapurna Pictures -- a company that the L.A. Times described as currently "energizing the indie film world" this weekend -- the picture, with a mostly new cast, was brought back to life and currently is one of the biggest buzzed about films at Cannes (read our ...

  • News: Nick Cave’s ‘Wangster’ On Show At Cann ..
Nick Cave’s latest foray into screenwriting has made its international premiere at Cannes. The 52-year-old singer has adapted Matt Bondurant’s novel The Wettest County in the World for the John Hillcoat-directed Lawless , which tells the story of three infamous bootlegging brothers in prohibition-era Virginia. It stars Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman and Shia LaBeouf, with an original score co-written by Cave with partner-in-crime and former Grinderman bandmate , The Dirty Three’s Warren Ellis. The film has already been dubbed a “wangster” – a mixture between a western and a gangster – much to the chagrin of its cast. But ...
