The title says it all.. this one BANGS! If you ever watch EDM videos on youtube you have to be familiar with genre trolls, who seem to get their jollies by grieving about how “This song is dubstep!.. Wahwahwha” Well here is one that will keep them genre guessing all day. If you are at [...]

  • Graded on a Curve: Lee Hazlewood, The LHI Ye ..
If Lee Hazlewood lingers in the contemporary cultural memory, it’s easily due to his work with Nancy Sinatra. On The LHI Years: Nudes, Singles and Backsides (1968-1971), the Light in the Attic label collects a bunch of his post-Nancy collaborations and a welcome helping of his solo shots, and the results are highly recommended not [...]

  • A Personal History of the Beastie Boys
I was a self-censored kid.  Permanently unpopular through most of high school I dabbled in a mix of naive romanticism and some sort of Puritanism which American schools give rise to to keep kids from going insane from being permanently unpopular.  So it's with little surprise that around my 12th birthday when my parents handed me two cassette tapes, Gloria Estefan's Greatest Hits and Pearl Jam Ten,  that I popped in the former and had to literally wear it out before I took up the other tape and my life was changed forever. A Vanilla Ice, Color Me ...

  • On the Horizon: draflyncu, Gulp.
Alas, not a day goes by when the unspoken demise of the Super Furry Animals doesn't return to mind in order that it may cruelly torment round these parts. Head honcho Gruff Rhys has of course been more than accommodating over their absence, lavishing those enslaved in lament with a variety of wide-ranging side and lopsided projects (perhaps most notably last year's superlative Hotel Shampoo  solo effort ). This from SFA bassist Guto Pryce deviates rather more from paths collectively ambled however: a collaborative endeavour alongside Cardiffian Lindsey Leven, Game Love is a nostalgic joy bathed in a shimmering ...

Au Palais - ‘Some Velvet Morning’ (Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra cover) Subject to cover versions until the the end of time, Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra’s duet is timeless in its sentiment of melancholy and longing wrapped in sugary pop. Given an energetic jolt, this keening electro cut by London/Toronto duo Au Palai is Gothic, droning and futuristic (albeit a retro vision.)   Au Palais will release a follow up to last year’s Tender Mercy EP via The Sound of Sweet Nothing label soon. It’s reported to be a concept record based on the movie Heat by Michael Mann ...

Been a minute since we heard from London-via-Toronto electro-goth duo Au Palais . The pair's working on their debut LP, and they're also preparing an EP that takes insipration from the classic 1995 Michael Mann film Heat (yes, Heat ). In the meantime, here's a sinster-sounding cover of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Some Velvet Morning" that the group whipped up. The KVB From: Southampton, United Kingdom If you believe the hysterical doom mongers the end of the world is nigh (again) and not even Indiana Jones can save us this time. Apparently an ancient Mayan chain of stationers forgot to order their 2013 calendar and therefore, obviously, a cataclysmic event will destroy the earth before the end of this year. With the world teetering on the edge of extinction it's hardly surprising that Glum Rock is undergoing a long overdue renaissance.
