Alter The Press reached out to McIlwee who gave us the low down on his new venture, his now defunct "Blood Man" project, new music and more. Alter The Press: For anyone who doesn't know, what is Wicca Phase? Adam McIlwee: Wicca Pha$e $pring$ Eternal is ten years of moodiness cultivated on the internet, finally released this week after a great weekend and disappointing start to the week.
AND IT’S ALL OVER. RJ resolveu [...]

  • Boys Who Say No: "Contingencies" (album revi ..
There's being eclectic and then there is Contingencies , the forthcoming debut full length (out February 21st) from Toronto band Boys Who Say No .  The band seem to have a never-ending stream of influences that they  incorporate onto this record. What they do best is the pop.  The 1-2 punch of the hook-heavy "Ms Lee" and the bouncy "56K" will put a smile on even the most sour face. The album has it's darker moments, like the opener "Atonement", and the Morrissey -esque woe-is-me "(untitled)".  "You Used To Get Along" is strangely trapped in the middle, hanging out in ...

  • Hop Farm Festival nominated in NME Awards ..
We’re pleased to say that one of SupaJam’s favourite festivals has been nominated in this years NME Awards. 2011’s superb Hop Farm showing has bagged the boutique knees up a nomination in the best small festival category. Having hosted a blinder of a gig by Prince, alongside big performances from Morrissey and Iggy Pop (not to mention shows from The Barlights and The Dash courtesy of –ahem- us), Hop Farm looks like its in with a fair chance of taking home the honours. We’d love it if all our fans could take a moment to vote ...

  • Feature: Report: Laneway Sydney 2012
KATE HENNESSY reports on the Sydney leg of the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, which took place at Sydney College of the Arts in Rozelle on Sunday (February 5). Photos by ELIZE STRYDOM . Never trust anyone over 30 (to review a music festival). Known for our pernickety gripes, misanthropic snipes and general nitpickery often we can’t see the wood (the music) for the trees (the irritations). The task is handled better by breezy early-20-somethings to whom those perennial festival agitations (lack of dunnies, shade, cheap booze and nice food; glut of dickheads, schedule clashes, short sets and clusterfucks) make ...

  • Surrender To Howler
Howler From: Minneapolis, United States In 1961 Decca Records told the Beatles that guitar groups were on their way out. With only one genuine honest to goodness guitar band making it to the BBC's influential Sound of 2012 final 15 long list it would appear that they were a mere 50 years out. If the BBC are to be believed all that's left to do is order the coffin, draft the obituary for the Times and dust down the black suit and tie. But hold on a moment since when has the BBC ever been the arbiter of ...

  • Pure Filth
Filthy Boy From: London, United Kingdom With two Morrisseys in their ranks you might be expecting Filthy Boy to be a gang of gladioli twirling miserabilists and you'd be half right. With lyrics like "You look as pretty through the window magnificently kneeling between those men" these boys behaving badly share the young Mozzer's love of the dubiously erotic double entrendre. But there's a playfulness about Filthy Boy that owes more to Momus or the Divine Comedy than Moz's alma mater and they don't come more playful than the quite frankly bonkers Jimmie Jammies. Filthy ...

  • Video: The Holiday Crowd – ‘Pennies Found’ ..
Judging by “Pennies Found,” the Holiday Crowd are St. Morrissey’s latest acolytes. Also judging by “Pennies Found,” the Toronto band’s taking their religious obligations seriously: it’s excellent while sounding thoroughly like the Smiths, a tall order for anyone not named Johnny or Steven. The band’s debut album is out now on Shelflife and New Romantic. [...]

  • Music Review: Leonard Cohen - Old Ideas
Leonard Cohen Old Ideas [Sony; 2012] by Rowan Savage Rating: It’s impossible not to love Leonard Cohen. And I don’t necessarily mean platonically, though he himself manifests Platonic ideals — or at least one (of which more later). An “old scholar, better-looking now than when [he] was young” (as he wrote in his brilliant but self-indulgent novel, Beautiful Losers ), even when he’s touring merely to recover a lifetime of lost profits, this reviewer can testify that it’s impossible to believe that his disarming courtesy and gratitude are not completely sincere. A ladies’ man through and through, dead ...

Over The Bluffs, the debut release from The Holiday Crowd is described by the band as a love letter to Scarborough,  the childhood home of singer Imran Haniff and guitarist Colin Bowers.  Maybe so, but there’s more than enough flirting with late 80s British jangle pop here to make Morrissey blush with affection. “While She Waits” could easily [...]
