THE ROCK-AFIRE EXPLOSION (Movie Review)As a child of the 1980's, a trip to SHOWBIZ PIZZA PLACE was an event - a momentous occasion that was saved for birthday celebrations and other rare gatherings that warranted more than a simple meal. The Matteson, Illinois, ShowBiz was the one that I'd occasionally be treated to (along with the short-lived, similarly-themed, CELEBRATION STATION in Park Forest, IL), and what made the trip even better was the fact that ShowBiz was conveniently located directly next door to TOYS R US. MitziSo. Mitzi . I guess there's a lot of buzz behind this band. Or something. Or at least there was a year or so ago when they released what may or may not have been their debut EP. I dunno. No idea whatsoever. My finger is far too removed from the pulse to have any idea what's going on. At all. However. What I do know. Is that, "Hey, these songs are really fun!" Anyways. Tune-Yards / Mitzi / OuterwavesBrisbane Powerhouse - Sun Jan 22 Otherwise known as Dom Stephens from Oh Ye Denver Birds, Outerwaves is one man and some technology, singing like a distorted choirboy angel and looping it over beats tapped out on his pads. It sounds a lot like that Thom Yorke album, The Eraser, but you’ve got a much better chance of getting to see this guy live than Thom Yorke. The Whitest Boy Alive / MitziThe Tivoli - Thu Jan 29 Mitzi are a well-chosen support act, and not just because they’re broadly in the same genre as the headliner without being quite good enough to outshine them. It’s also because their disco tunes highlight the problem with picking a single genre and mining it to the exclusion of all else. They do it well, and their singer’s voice is a perfect match for their sound, but it all blurs together and after half an hour I’m sated.
