Minutemen

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Minutemen were members of teams of select men from the American colonial militia during the American Revolutionary War . They provided a highly mobile, rapidly deployed force that allowed the colonies to respond immediately to war threats, hence the name. Read More

  • Mike Watt & Friends: May 2, 2012 Le Poisson ..
[Photos courtesy of Robert Kidd.  See more of his excellent work HERE.] To paraphrase the late Jerry Garcia, not everybody knows who Mike Watt is, but those who do really appreciate Mike Watt.  Having long been established as an elder statesman of punk, post-punk and alternative rock starting with the seminal Minutemen and the inspired [...]

  • fIREHOSE: "lowFLOWs" The Columbia Anthology ..
fIREHOSE "lowFLOWs" The Columbia Anthology ('91-'93) Columbia/Legacy Recordings [2012] (2CD Set)  Fire Note Says: Re-visiting an important moment in time when we still called it college rock! Album Review: Minutemen Mike Watt and George Hurley recorded the fIREHOSE album, Ragin', Full On [1986] a year after the tragic death of their singer/guitarist and life-long friend, D. Boon, at the urging from Ohioan Ed Crawford (known as Ed fROMOHIO) to go on. The group recorded three albums for SST Records quickly and cheaply as a way of promoting their gigs - where they found that the indie punk community ...

  • On And Off Bass: Mike Watt
I could waste my word count here simply listing the number of bands (or ‘projs’ to use the man’s own parlance) that Mike Watt has formed, shaped, joined, helped or been a part of. Suffice it to say, the two he’s best known for, Minutemen and The Stooges, are arguably two of the most important, fascinating and mould-breaking-ly unique rock groups you’re ever likely to encounter. But even listing each individual endeavour like some kind of comprehensive punk rock CV would surely still fail to accurately portray the sheer scope of the personality, philosophy, language and practises ...

  • Punk Mariachi!
Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, here's a few tracks from L.A. bands playing...punk mariachi? How is such a thing possible?  One style is electric, fast 2/4 or 4/4 beats, hard drumming, modern, angry and cynical, and originally sung in English; the other is seemingly the complete opposite: acoustic, slow, in 3/4 time, no drums, traditional, and sentimental. You may be a rock'n'roller, but if you've grown up in Los Angeles, you're part Mexican, even if you're not. (Like how Lenny Bruce said that everyone in New York ...

  • Mixtape # 40 / May 2012 / Slightly Slutty Mi ..
Subtle flith in this mix, plenty of pure guitar driven rock'n'roll with a garage stench and honest energy. Right off the bat Montreal's own Each Other gives us a insight into what this young band could achieve. Raw, catchy and cool. Then there is Black Gum , hailing from the ever so eventful Austin, Texas. Another promising act that delivers a killer track with "Sludge", that reminded me strongly of Beat Happening that I simply had to throw in one of my Calvin's favorites. The People's Temple is a psychedelic band from Michigan, been operating for ...

  • DEATH GRIPS: SYSTEMS SHATTERING
Death Grips’s Ex-Military was a fearsome album—beats sourced from several banned records, lyrics about life in the edge cities with shout-outs to the Minutemen and time travel. Their new album is out now and they are righteous. This interview by Rebecca Haithcoat and Chris Ziegler.

  • REVIEW: Death Grips - "The Money Store"
Death Grips  The Money Store Record Label:  Epic Records Release Date:  April 24, 2012 There's an old Buddhist saying:  "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him."  Essentially the meaning is -- don't be led.  Or beware false prophets.  Or don't let expectations ruin your life.  Or beware men with bright orange robes.  Like most Buddhist sayings, it's a sentence which implies everything and, thus, nothing.  It's also the sort of thing that might pop into your head the first time through The Money Store  the new LP from Death Grips, the underground Sacramento ...

Hermetic is Eric Axen (baritone guitar, lead vocals) and Bart Newman (drums, backup vocals). They draw inspiration from high-energy post-punk (Minutemen, Fugazi, Mission of Burma) and heartfelt 90s indie rock (think Jawbreaker, Inbreds, Plumtree, etc). Check out Hermetic’s LP Release w/ Chung Antique + Movieland on May 4th… you can attend here on Facebook. Enjoy [...]

  • Mike Watt, Deerhoof's John Dietrich, some ot ..
Mike Watt’s doing something, I guess. I don’t know what, I can hardly be bothered to find out. That guy’s always doing stuff, like being in the Minutemen years ago and then being in fIREHOSE years ago and then being in The Stooges for a while and recording a Kelly Clarkson song, I think? Not that I’ll ever check up on this stuff. I’m kind of the Mike Watt of not doing things, which means I’m kind of the Mike Watt of not being like Mike Watt. Right now, Exclaim! (or somebody, who knows ...

1988: Dinosaur Jr. - Bug by Winston O'Boogie">Dr. Winston O'Boogie on 04-18-2012 Sonic Youth, Black Flag, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Hüsker Dü. It’s safe to say that SST Records had the strongest lineup of the late 80s. These bands pushed the volume and intensity of guitar-rock to earsplitting heights, but none of them could quite pull of the face-melting, fuzz-drenched guitar freak-outs of SST label mates Dinosaur Jr.’s own J Mascis. After rising to the pinnacle of slacker apathy early in life, Mascis rounded up his high school buddies Lou Barlow and Murph to form Dinosaur Jr ...

  • Plankton Wat - Spirits (2012)
If, as d.boon said, the Minutemen were Scientist Rock, then let Plankton Wat be Shaman Rock. "Spirits," the latest from the band that is the one man mystic Dewey Mahood, is another trip into a world haunted and uplifted by the teeming energy of all lives and all moments. No moment is too small for Mahood to celebrate with his drones, his space blues, his occasional psychedelic electric guitar. In fact, Plankton Wat speaks to the vastness of all moments. The dreamy electric guitar line in the expressive light psych of "Evening Sky" sets the tone; it is both ...

  • There Was a Time: The History of Uncle Tupel ..
Uncle Tupelo L-R: Jay Farrar, Mike Heidorn (stooping behind drums), Jeff Tweedy (with beer and bass and all like, "Yo, where's the drink tix, bro?") If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times: One man's lazy embedding of YouTube videos is another man's history of Uncle Tupelo . Consider it a documentary, minus all the boring interviews, montages, and the Ken Burns move where a voice intones dramatically as a camera slowly pans across a black and white photo, and a lonesome banjo picks underneath. Here all you're getting are videos and ...
