  • Matthew Herbert On Labi Siffre
“Considering Labi Siffre has had at least a couple of Number Ones, directly or indirectly, he’s maybe not an obvious choice as an outsider. From being sampled by Eminem for ‘My Name Is’ to the Madness cover of his song ‘It Must Be Love’, his fingerprints have been on popular music for many decades now. In typically modern fashion though, his actual voice is rarely heard. We may inadvertently know about what restaurant Rihanna is eating in tonight via Twitter, but we probably can’t note one important thing about Labi Siffre - one of the most important British musicians ...

  • The 405 Art Digest: 20th May
Greetings fellow art fiends. I don't believe there's yet been an update about the course that our art coverage is taking, so here it is. I know that quite a few of you take an interest in this because the art digest gets a lot of views each week, which of course makes me grin. So firstly, thank you for taking the art coverage seriously in spite of the main part of the site being music. However, you'll notice that there has been a bit of favouritism towards new media. London-based new media at that. It's ...

  • Jay-Z Reveals Why He Signed Rita Ora... (DET ..
Jay-Z has a method behind his madness.  DETAILS: Rita Ora Is Happy To Be Compared To Rihanna! UK singer Rita Ora caught Jay-Z's attention a little over a year ago, and after experiencing her infectious personality and ambition, Jay had to have her on Roc Nation.  In an interview with VEVO LIFT, Jay-Z spoke highly of the "R.I.P." songstress.    "You can see the potential. When she enters a room it changes and that presence you can't duplicate that, especially at a young age. It was just infectious to me, like 'man she loves this' she's ...

  • Simon Says: Explore Rock Sounds From Soundcl ..
Words: Simon Opie I wanted to collect up some varied new music from the UK that’s been coming in to FADED GLAMOUR Towers over the last few weeks and falling into the Altrock inbox. There’s a lot going on and this is only a fraction but it’s the part I feel is really worth passing on - featuring Static Plan , Since Monroe and Dissociates . First up is Guildford band Static Plan who have a self-released and self-titled 4-Track EP just out. It’s a self-confessed blend of influences from Nine Inch Nails to Radiohead , but I like it ...

  • DJ Disasters: Jack Beats
Every DJ has one. A night when everything that can possibly go wrong does - and it does so in spectacular fashion. Jack Beats link together two completely different disciplines. Plus One is a Scottish turntablist with roots in the hip hop scene, while Beni G cut his teeth with The Mixologists. • Happy Mondays - Live At The O2 Academy, Brix ..
It’s a few minutes before the Happy Mondays are due to take to the stage for the London leg of their first tour as the original line-up in over nineteen years. The compere drawls a few Mancunian expletives into the microphone and whacks on ‘Love Spreads’. The ghost of late ‘80s and early ‘90s Manchester is most definitely in the building. Looking around there are more than a few haunted souls in the audience, too. In fact, there’s barely a face in sight that doesn’t look like it’s been put through its paces at the Hacienda ...

  • Hot Docs -- Reviews (April 29-30, 2012)
Inocente The Job [Cumberland, Sunday April 29, 1:30 pm] The primary scene of this documentary is a French corporate boardroom of a job recruitment agency that pits a panel of headhunters against a ten job-seekers of varying ages and job experience.  As the perspective changes between four static, strategically-placed cameras, the viewer gets to observe the often-tense situations the job candidates go through over the course of two days. With the two days entailing entailing role-playing, mock debates and intimidating panel discussions, candidates are often confused with the techniques and at times even feels border-line demeaning. But there is ...

  • Kasabian's Coachella Short Film: Boozing, Da ..
Filed under: News , Video , New Music Press Here Kasabian had a watershed two weeks at Coachella 's first-ever extended festival in Indio, Calif. The British band indulged in some traditional rock 'n' roll excess, and their experience is best related by guitarst Serge Pizzorno, as excerpted below. "California was insane a week of madness: Boozing and laughing, dancing and tearing it up. We tore it up," Pizzorno tells Spinner. "But most important was the gig; it felt like we had something to prove. Rock 'n' roll is dangerous when it backs you into a corner, because you become an animal ...
