Mutts - Chicago Blues Rock Band Release New ..Pray For Rain by Mutts Chicago's Mutts have been called a cross between Tom Waits and Nirvana...while I can hear the Tom Waits comparison, I think the band's music is sounds closer to 70's blues-rock though the band can quickly switch from a psychedelic head-nodder with a pulsing bass and drums beat to a mellow number driven by an acoustic piano and Mike Maimone's vocals. Regardless, this is great stuff and the inability to put an exact label on the band's music is a complement to their unique sound. The Roots - Undun (2011)The tenth studio album from “The Greatest Band in Late Night” is billed as a concept album, the death to life story of a drug pusher, Redford Stephens. But honestly I didn't really follow the narrative through this album, and it isn’t pushing any conceptual boundaries for a hip-hop outfit to rhyme about the life and death of a dope dealer. That aside, this album is still a fairly solid collection of songs from one of the best bands in any genre. Blah Blah BlahI was thrown for a loop when I first started listening to Blah Blah Blah's "Why Am I The Only One Laughing". As the track leads in, the audience is treated to a post-punk rhythm comparable to something like Bloc Party or Interpol; I was just waiting for the guitars to explode or (lead singer) Solomon David's vocals to rupture into a low roar. What hooked me, though, was the fact it didn't. Doing so would've sounded too obvious, too cliché if you will.
