Scratch any literate songwriter – Win Butler, David Bowie, PJ Harvey – and beneath the surface you will find a debt to TS Eliot The New Yorker critic Louis Menand, reflecting on TS Eliot's transition from radical modernist to arch-conservative, wrote in a review of the poet's letters: "He tried to shut the door on modern life. It was too late of course. He was the author of Prufrock and The Waste Land. He was already inside." Eliot would not have loved pop music but pop music loves Eliot. Ninety years after the publication of The Waste Land , he remains ...

  • DeLorean: David Bowie - "Heroes" (1977)
1977: David Bowie - "Heroes" by Winston O'Boogie">Dr. Winston O'Boogie on 03-23-2012 Once upon a time, David Bowie moved to Berlin, snorted epic amounts of cocaine, and recorded some killer tunes. So killer, in fact, that what has come to be know as the “Berlin trilogy” – Low , Heroes , and Lodger – have been universally recognized as some of the most groundbreaking and influential pop music ever recorded by a strung out ninety-pound drug addict (though John Frusciante certainly gave him a run for his money). But in all seriousness, these albums kick ass like few have before or after ...

  • Classic Albums: Iggy Pop - The Idiot
In July 1976, Iggy Pop and David Bowie hid away in a recording studio known as Château d'Hérouville just outside of Paris to record ‘Low’; the official beginning to Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy, and what is largely referred to as the most depressing record ever written. With this seminal classic came another that had been started but never completed from a year earlier, Iggy Pop’s ‘The Idiot’, which is referred to as the unofficial beginning to Bowie’s Berlin period and the second most depressing record ever written. ‘The Idiot’ was Pop’s first solo record since the ...

  • David Bowie - Scary Monsters (and Super Cree ..
Of all the Bowie albums, this is the one which most confuses me. It comes before he went all commercial pop with Let's Dance  but after his often critically acclaimed experimental period where he worked closely with Brian Eno among others. For this album he got together a great collection of musicians and tried to put together an album which, among other things, would bury Major Tom and Ziggy Stardust for good. In many ways the album marks a watershed in Bowie's career. The experimental and avant-garde elements which had driven Bowie's work throughout the mid-seventies were ...

  • Album Art of the Month
From now on, at the end of each month we'll be sharing with you some cover art from albums and EPs that have recently been released, and making a good old fuss over them. For now, as an introduction, we're showing you some albums from any period of time, just for the fun of it. Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention - We're Only In It For The Money – Will Slater Some might say that Frank Zappa's best early sign of peculiarity was when he appeared on television playing the bicycle, which he took very seriously. For me, it's this album sleeve, simply because the sight of him in a dress reminds me very fondly of his famous response to a journalist's question, "You have long hair. Does that make you a girl?" The response was of course, "You have a wooden leg. Does that make you a table?" David Bowie – Lodger – Tim Boddy It's taken a while for Lodger to dismiss the cheap ideology that it was the runt of the so called 'Berlin trilogy', the final release (1979) in this iconic series, though iconoclastic types will dispute it ever really existed as such a series. The most Brian Eno fingerprinted of them all (he barely got to touch Low in all honesty), this post-Thin White Duke/post-cocaine Bowie album is one of the most experimental he procured and was alarmingly successful and focussed with it, bridging the gap between Neu!, reggae and Talking Heads (acting somewhat of precursor to them in fact). But ah yes the album cover; it's taken on a Polaroid SX-70 type camera with stale lighting, and then crudely blown-up out to create an amateurish low resolution effect. The image itself features Bowie on his back with limbs sodden and uncomfortably spread on the bathroom ...

  • Sentimental Christmastime

  • The Birthday Kiss
• One new track festive, one not
The Birthday Kiss, Leeds' boxfresh swooning lovelorn indiepop home for ex-Research and Lodger members, have put out a Christmas tune. Sentimental Christmastime illustrates the death of both youthful festive excitement and an adult relationship in something you could waltz to. Sentimental Christmastime by The Birthday Kiss It's been a banner year for Grace Petrie, incorporating playing the Glastonbury Leftfield at Billy Bragg's invitation and having him claim she "stole the fucking show", tour supporting Emmy The Great and accompanying Josie Long on her guerrilla Alternative Reality Tour, and tomorrow and Wednesday she's joining in with Robin Ince ...

  • The Friday Morning Listen: David Bowie – Lod ..
Are there any big-name musicians out there who seem to be universally loved but that you sort of don’t get? Yeah, me too. And it’s always kind of bugged me. So much so that I’ll often revisit the music just to see either what I’ve been missing (maybe a light bulb will finally flicker on) or to confirm my usual [...]

  • The Silver Factory - The Sun Shines Over You ..

  • Video Premiere: Ashtar Command's Daft Arts-P ..
Ashtar Command is the songwriting and recording vehicle of Brian Liesegang and Chris Holmes, a Los Angeles-based everydude whose résumé is as hair-raising as his rolodex. (Highlights: He is Paul McCartney's warm-up DJ, his project's full-length debut, American Sunshine , is being co-released by Shepard Fairey's Obey imprint). The Matt Ornstein-directed clip below for "Mark IV," an alt-rock bliss-out from said debut, was produced collaboratively by Lodger Films and Daft Punk's production company, Daft Arts, and features a supernatural narrative at one with Holmes' passion for exactly that. It also features a cameo from actor Trevor Morgan ...

  • Amor Elefante - Amor Elefante
Amor Elefante, Amor Elefante Independiente, Argentina Rating: 76 by Pierre Lestruhaut There’s not much you can say about a band like Amor Elefante in terms of their background. A quick search will have you confronting a scarcity of information on their social network profiles, a few amateurishly shot live performances from a year ago on YouTube, and a couple of blog interviews where they seem to dismiss the usual boring questions with goofy and ironic answers. Which is why, just like it happens with a lot of stuff we review on CF, we’re left with the impossibility of ...

  • Yeasayer Working On New Material
Yeasayer have begun to put together new material for their forthcoming new album. With 2010's 'Odd Blood' Yeasayer seemed to reach a wider audience. The band's flamboyant songwriting had been trimmed down to something more accessible, with some tracks displaying a real R&B; edge. Touring to widespread acclaim, the American indie outfit recently retreated into the studio. Locking the door behind them, Yeasayer have kept tight-lipped about the progress of their new album. Breaking their silence of Spin , Yeasayer revealed that the band are pulling 12 hour shifts to focus on the new record. Holed up in Brooklyn ...
