Liturgy

Liturgy

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Liturgy are the first black metal band that truly embodies the ghosts of New York. They play metal like it's a minimalist downtown art/life/religion project in the tradition of dronemasters Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham and La Monte Young's Dream Syndicate. Read More

[Photos by Robert Kidd. Check out more of his excellent work [HERE]] The band Liturgy are no strangers to controversy. And given the band’s latest change in sonic direction, the Brooklyn “transcendental black metal” band can count on more of it. As with artists like Horseback, Liturgy, and particularly frontman and founder Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, refuse [...]

In perhaps the most epic triple header since Florida’s Liturgy/Sleigh Bells/Diplo shows earlier this year, it has just been announced that Grimes, Diplo, and Skrillex will be touring across Canada on a train. They won’t be coming to Seattle at all, but if you don’t mind the drive, the Full Flex Express, as they call Read more...

  • Damon Albarn - Dr Dee
If you’re unfamiliar with the alchemist John Dee, mathematician, astronomer, advisor to the Virgin Queen and supposed inspiration for both Shakespeare’s Prospero and Marlowe’s Faustus, you’ll learn little of his life from this album. But that’s not really a criticism; Albarn never set out to write a conventional operatic libretto. ‘Dr Dee’ is instead a magical mood piece, a celebratory yet plaintive Elizabethan masque about a spectacular fall from favour and grace. It incorporates the structures of 16th century polyphony utilising lutes and dulcimers, the African kora and contemporary orchestration courtesy of the BBC Philharmonic ...

  • ♫ Listen: Oval - Sophioko [EP]
I love that Markus Popp, a.k.a. Oval, is making music again. After a lengthy hiatus, Popp returned a couple years ago and has already released well over a hundred songs, spread across two full-lengths ( O , OvalDNA ) and two EPs ( Oh! , Oval/Liturgy split). His latest release is called Sophioko , a four-track EP that continues his meticulous, stuttering electronic explorations, made available for free this morning via SoundCloud. No embed, but you can stream the entire EP here . • Thrill Jockey: http://www.thrilljockey.com • Shitkatapult: http://www.shitkatapult.com

  • Stream: Occupy This Album Sampler
Music For Occupy are offering a preview of their new Occupy Wall Street benefit album. The Occupy movement has spread across the globe. The Clash office sits close to the site of the (former) School of Ideas, while Occupy London is well within walking distance. It's something the team pass and ponder everyday, so it's only appropriate that we flag up a new release. Music For Occupy is an American led project, with the aim of compiling a box set featuring artists sympathetic to the cause. A 78 song box set will be released later this year, with ...

Keiji Haino / Jim O’Rourke / Oren Ambarchi Imikuzishi [Black Truffle; 2012] by Nick RS Rating: Much of the loud music we value as forward-thinking or cool — black metal, doom, shoegaze, drone, noise — concerns itself with being ‘monolithic.’ The sound that exits the amps of sunn 0))) or Earth comes at its audience in an undifferentiated mass like hot, moist air hitting a mountain range or, I dunno, the locust swarm scene from Days of Heaven . Production choices in the more stylish strains of metal tend toward the homogenizing and bedimming, with blast beats becoming nearly indistinguishable from vocal gurgling and ...
