Gary Clark Jr was born and raised in Austin. He's been performing in clubs around Austin since he was a teenager, and vwas embraced early on by the legendary promoter Clifford Antone, owner of the blues club Antone's. Through Clifford's connections, Clark sat in with and learned from a wide variety of modern-day guitar greats. • MiSSiSSiPPI MEETS MANHATTAN: Robert Belfour ..
An olde show review from two-thousand-ought-seven b y Matt Rogers: "The Black Keys? I ain't never met 'em. I ain't scared of 'em, though." When reminded that he had indeed met "those two white boys from Ohio," T-Model responded: "They play a different style of music. I'm playing the hard blues, and they can't play that. They play rock, and I don't like rock. They wants my style. Don't you think they don't now." And so four days after the much-hyped Black Keys blasted a sold-out Mercury Lounge, Fat Possum label-mates T-Model Ford ...

  • SCOTT H BiRAM cooks with BAD iNGREDiENTS
@ Facebook // interwebs // Buy via Scott // Bloodshot Records // iTunes // Amazon Scott H Biram's Bad Ingredients album is aptly titled. His most blues-based work, is also his most sonically dynamic and lyrically accomplished.  Demons seem loose-leashed, tempered, but no less vicious, no less snarling. Brother Biram's straight in control now and crackin' the whip. Scott's roots grow deep and strong and his guitar work is at it's best here, concise, muscular and nimble. His stomp-box sounds like its made of basalt and iron wood. Biram's trusty '59 Gibson hollowbody has always been a weapon  in his hands ...

  • Rahe
“Music is the only thing in the world that makes me feel complete. I have to share that; I feel it’s what I was sent here to do.”   Defining creative musicians by genre is often a difficult task, but in the case of Rahe, it’s virtually impossible. And describing her as a singer/songwriter simply doesn’t do justice to an artist whose songs weave beautifully melodic lines with complex, compelling chord changes, soulfully powerful lyrics and a diaspora of world rhythms into a musical vision that is entirely her own. With a life story as colorful and ...

  • Lightnin' Hopkins - Buddy Brown's Blues
When it comes to original Texas blues guitar, Lightnin' Hopkins is the man. Utterly naturalistic, haunting and lonesome, this is where the fingerpicking style came from. Here he is singing unaccompanied, and it's devastating stuff. Lightnin' Hopkins - Buddy Brown's Blues (alternate download)

  • RIP: David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Delta blues l ..
From the Chicago Tribune : David "Honeyboy" Edwards, a bluesman who was a living, breathing link to blues legend Robert Johnson, died early Monday morning of congestive heart failure while resting at home, according to the performer's official website. He was 96. Born in 1915, Edwards left home when he was 14 years old, to perform with Big Joe Williams. It was a life on the road that the classic Delta blues player continued right up to April of this year, when his health took a turn for the worse. • Get rich or die tryin': how hip-hop changed ..
From Public Enemy to P Diddy, a new TV documentary charts how anger, sex and bling turned rap into a global phenomenon It's 1989 and I'm hangin' tough with my £11.99 skateboard from Argos and a bright yellow Sony Walkman in Stanmore, a leafy suburb of north London where the most ghetto it gets is an overdue library book. I flip over a cassette of the most important album since Marvin Gaye's What's Going On (though I don't think such portentous thoughts then: just that A-Ha suddenly don't sound too amazing). It's ...

  • Justin Townes Earle at Newport Folk
Newport Folk 2011 Photos by Chris March Justin Townes Earle - Wanderin' Just 10 minutes before Justin Townes Earle was to take the Quad Stage, I stood less than a dozen feet away from the singer, our backs turned to one-another in the Newport Folk Artist & Media tent... I hashed out our plans for the next few sets with a pair of photographers. Unaware of his presence, I loudly proclaimed, "I am not going to miss much of this Justin Townes Earle set. Really looking forward to it." As if on cue, I turned as Earle craned his neck in my ...

I have a gig writing a monthly column called (what else) Deep Blues for our local music mag azine here in Saint Augustine, FL, Ignition . Here's a piece I did on the cigar box guitar revolution. Thanks to photographer Dan Florez for the use of the shots he took of my Lowebow. “ So I went ahead and made me a guitar. I got me a cigar box, I cut me a round hole in the middle of it, take me a little piece of plank, nailed it onto that cigar box, and I got me some screen wire and ...
