  • Album Review: Trombone Shorty - For True (20 ..
For True is the latest offering from New Orleans multi-instrumentalist Troy Andrews better known as Trombone Shorty . The record is a true genre-busting affair, with contemporary RnB featuring alongside the more traditional elements of the New Orleans sound. For True is a high-energy romp; it grabs your right from the first note, and doesn’t let up throughout. “Buckjump” and “Encore” is one helluva an opening double punch combo. • Gift of Gab: The Next Logical Progression ..
For Blackalicious front man Gift of Gab, his artistry has always lived outside of hip-hop’s fashionable margins, his old school cadence as nostalgic as the dusty drum breaks he prefers. Over the years, that aesthetic has worked well for the veteran MC: he’s worked with everyone from ?uestlove to Zach de la Rocha, from Ledisi to the iconic Gil Scott-Heron. Through it all, The Gift of Gab has always remained true to himself, no matter how esoteric his blend of preachy rhymes and distinctive baritone.

  • Marc’s Musings: Ten Lessons Learned From Bow ..
Marc Millman was on hand for Soulive’s exceptional Bowlive 3 run at Brooklyn Bowl and put together a list of ten “lessons” he learned from the run. Here’s his take, photos and videos… 1. Soulive are a super-talented and versatile band. Over the course of ten nights, Eric Krasno and Alan & Neal Evans played with everyone from famous jazz guitar players (John Scofield) to funky horn players (Karl Denson) to great R&B; singers (Ledisi) and a legendary Funk bass player (George Porter Jr.). And they were great with all of them. I will admit to never being a huge fan of instrumental only bands. I am always happiest when singers get involved for at least some part of each ...
