  • News | Daytrotter becomes paid service, team ..
We’re huge fans of streaming website, Daytrotter at FFS, they make recordings that quite often sound better than the bands’ albums. Very excitingly, they’ve teamed up with Communion Records (started by Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons and Kev Jones) who are recording bands for them in London. Past Daytrotter guests include Laura Marling, Mountain [...] ( Read more... ) Categories: News

  • An enchanting evening with Laura Marling
Last night some very lucky triple j listeners, Time Out Sydney readers and special guests were treated to a very unique and quietly spectacular event.  Ms Laura Marling performed a very intimate show for 165 lucky guests at the Paddington Uniting Church, Sydney.  The attentive audience watched Laura and her five piece band (featuring double [...]

  • King Charles - Live At The Garage, London ..
Firstly, good effort on scrubbing up well. The band look very smart and their mums would be proud. But then comes King Charles, probably the only person to wear a Guantanamo bay style orange jumpsuit and still retain that regal air, reminiscent of a modern day Prince. This man has a ‘tache that puts Eugene from Gogol Bordello to shame. You cannot help but admire his mighty dreadlocks, neatly coiffed onto the top of his head, not for long though. First up is ‘Mr Flick’ a b-side with a guitar riff that means business, managing to fit in a smooth ...

  • News: Triple J Reveals ‘Second’ Hottest 100 ..
In the lead-up to triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown on Australia Day, eventual list topper Gotye revealed how he’d like to see Godley & Creme-inspired album track ‘State of The Art’ make the cut. It didn’t, of course, but we can now reveal how close it actually came thanks to a list of the Hottest 100 also-rans (picks 101-200) published by triple j today. Included among the selections of the “second” Hottest 100 are hotly tipped tracks by Oh Mercy (‘Stay Please Stay’), The Middle East (‘Land Of The Bloody Unknown’), Cut Copy (‘Need You Now’), Loon Lake ...

  • First Aid Kit – Emmylou (Wichita) [Review] ..
What is it with Swedes that makes them think they’re from the American deep south? The Tallest Man On Earth has been peddling his (brilliant) twangy cod-Americana for a few years now, and now First Aid Kit are building on the success of their debut album with a sound that is so bloody Country that they’re writing songs called ‘Emmylou’. I’d love to completely dismiss this record, mostly because my mum will probably love it and play it non-stop like she did with that bloody Laura Marling record, but there’s something about the Söderberg sisters’ crystal ...

Our pompous old playlist-making owl Brian is back. With some bombastic pose, dubious claims about his whereabouts in the past year and a playlist of 2011's gems. How we've missed the silly thing. • Feature: Report: Laneway Melbourne 2012
DOUG WALLEN and NICK ARGYRIOU review 64.7 percent of the entire bill of Melbourne’s St Jerome’s Laneway Festival at Footscray Community Arts Centre on Saturday. (Fans of Girls, The Panics, The Horrors and SBTRKT send your grievances to PO Box 475, Prahran, VIC 3181, or just wait for the Sydney review.) Photos by MICHAEL BAINBRIDGE . The ominous clouds that “greeted” punters at last year’s St Jerome’s Laneway Festival were replaced by near-perfect skies and a mercury that hovered above 30 degrees all day. For the third year running, the festival returned to the Footscray Community ...

  • Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves Of Destiny ..
As proven so eloquently in our previous issue’s gorgeous cover story, Miss Houghton is a firecracker to contend with - small yet mighty and very headstrong, when she explodes, she covers her debut album in iridescent sparks that take your breath away. Floating like a geordie Joni Mitchell over the cosmic folky cloud of her accompanying Hooves, it would seem that her breathy vocals fall softly like snowflakes, dusting their musical landscape with a blanket of angelic delicateness. But as it thaws, it reveals a harsher side to Houghton’s mischievous personality. It’s a wicked streak that runs through ...

At just 33 minutes long, Your Truly, Cellophane Nose is chaotic, cluttered and certainly not straightforward enough to cast her as the ‘next Laura Marling’. Thank goodness for that. Read the full story on DrownedinSound.com

  • Jack White, Interrupted
The unrivaled Jack White has announced he'll be releasing his debut album Blunderbuss on April 24th. The first single off the album, "Love Interruption" is an acoustic roots rock track that incorporates folk and blues elements. Nashville singer, Ruby Amanfu provides supporting vocals to White's demands on love. Given all the projects White supports via his Nashville-based label Third Man Records, including rock 'n' roll hall of fame inductee Wanda Jackson , and his 'Blue Series' including artists First Aid Kit and Laura Marling , it comes as no surprise that White himself has taken a more Southern rock direction ...

  • Frightened Rabbit Highland Shows
Frightened Rabbit have outlined plans for a tour of the Highlands, mixing solo shows with full band dates. The Highlands appear to have become quite the hot destination for any new group with a folk bent. Mumford & Sons started the trend, while Laura Marling has also become enamoured with Scotland’s Northern lands. Now Frightened Rabbit have confirmed plans for a full tour of the Highlands. However the band have a greater claim to the venture than most. The five piece are actually Scottish for a start, while Frightened Rabbit are also known for disappearing off into the North to ...
