Kingsmen

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The Kingsmen are a 1960s garage rock / frat rock band from Portland , Oregon . They are best known for their 1963 recording of Richard Berry 's " Louie Louie ", which held the #2 spot on the Billboard charts for six weeks. The single has become an enduring classic. Read More

  • Eric Copeland: "Louie, Louie, Louie"
As far as 2012 is concerned, Eric Copeland stays busy. His main act, NYC noisenik veterans Black Dice , just released the very solid Mr. Impossible , and he's already released a few 7" singles on No Age member Dean Spunt's Post Present Medium label. Now, he's readying a solo LP, Limbo , for release on June 5 via Underwater Peoples . "Louie, Louie, Louie" is our first taste from the album, and it is not a cover of the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie" (nor is it a homage to the TV show "Louie" -- we think). • Don & Dewey
Some frantic R&B; now with a Latin twist from an LP on the Specialty label from the 70's but most of the songs on this compilation are from the 50's and early 60's. Wikipedia says - "Don and Dewey were an American rock and roll duo, comprising Don "Sugarcane" Harris (June 18, 1938[1] - 1999) and Dewey Terry (July 17, 1937[2] - May 11, 2003). Both were born and grew up in Pasadena, California. In 1954, Dewey Terry was a founding member of a group called The Squires while still in high school. He was later joined by ...

  • Interview: The Sonics
Well before Nirvana et al created this idea of Seattle being this raw and unhinged place for alternative music, a whole bunch of great bands from the ‘60s Northwest were setting up the template. Bands like the Kingsmen, The Wailers, and Paul Revere and the Raiders created raw, DIY, garage-based...

  • Spoken Word: The Ballad of the Kingsmen
Todd Snider: The Ballad of the Kingsmen [ purchase ] There are a whole lot of spoken-word songs to choose from in Todd Snider's catalog. In fact, even when Snider sings, it kind of sounds like he's talking. Since Snider says it all -- literally -- in the lyrics of "The Ballad of the Kingsmen," there's no point going too deeply into its backstory. The song has appeared on two official albums by Snider, as well as on several bootlegs and scores of YouTube clips. Here's the original studio version, from 2005's East Nashville Skyline . And, here's what ...

  • This Week In Billboard History: Meet Newcome ..
Guess which of these things happened during the week of January 30 in Billboard history: A) Newcomer named Britney Spears in 1999 debuts atop both the album and singles charts. B) The Kingsmen's "Louie Louie," a 1964 hit song with lyrics that are all but indecipherable, is called "pornographic" by the Governor of Indiana. C) Manufacturers and merchandisers have a "brilliant" idea: the CD longbox. D) All of the above...

  • R.I.P. Kearney Barton, the Pacific Northwest ..
The Stranger brings news of Kearney Barton’s passing, an audio engineer of mythic proportions, credited with giving the Pacific Northwest a sound in its nascent, noisy early days: Light in the Attic Records co-owner Matt Sullivan just gave us the bad news that audio engineer guru Kearney Barton, one of the pioneers of the Northwest rock and soul sound, passed away last night. He was 81. Barton had been in poor health for the last four years, after working nearly five decades as an audio engineer, manning the controls for such groups as The Sonics, Black on White Affair ...

The Wailers: Tall Cool One [ purchase ] The Wailers: I Want To Walk With You [ purchase ] The Fabulous Wailers were the Zeligs of the Northwest Rock 'n' Roll scene. They were still Tacoma high school kids when they formed in 1959, the same year as another Tacoma band, The Ventures. The Wailers hit it big first, playing their top 40 instrumental "Tall Cool One" on American Bandstand. Then in 1960, with vocalist Rockin' Robin Roberts,  they recorded an obscure R&B; tune called "Louie Louie" which became a regional smash. Alas, it was the Portland-based Kingsmen who scored a nationwide hit with ...

  • On This Day November 9th
Today, back in 1963, one of the rawest slices of garage rock ever scratched onto wax was released—The Kingsmen’s Louie Louie . Louie Louie was first written and recorded by Richard Berry in 1955. On the Berry’s original the famous hook was sung by a baritone, giving the song more of a swinging RnB vibe. Whilst it never became a national hit, Berry’s version of Louie Louie picked up regional success on the America’s West coast, with performing bands regularly featuring it in their repertoires. However by the time The Kingsmen got there hands on the ...

  • And Bands: I Could Be So Good To You
Don and The Goodtimes : I Could Be So Good To You [ purchase ] Portland's Don Gallucci is the one man link between The Kingsmen and The Stooges and it's quite a story. As a high school kid, he played those memorable electric piano riffs on The Kingsmen's 1963 hit "Louie Louie" but was too young to go on tour when the single went nationwide. Down but not out, he got some buddies together and formed Don and the Goodtimes. They toured the Northwest circuit in top hats-- filling a gap left by the now LA-based hit making machine ...

Old Californio - SundrunkAngels Employing the same rootsy-bluegrass-desert-vibe post- Dead psychedelia that made Westering Again so charming, Old Californio come trotting back riding bareback along that old and dusty california trail.  Bringing some Byrds-ian jangle along with some banjo, lap steel, wurlitzer piano, and fine fiddle playing to their already solid musical chops, Old Californio explore some vast bluegrassy terrirtory vacated by the Grateful Dead .  And they do it first rate all the way.  Rich Dembowski has a way with a phrase and musical turn, always finding the melody in his songs, and as ever, the band is tight while being ...

  • V/A - "Oldies (3)" (2000)
In 2000 I got myself a CD burner. Good thing I did because as my bad luck would have it, I would spend the next few years being absolutely dirt poor with no ability to actually buy CDs. So whatever money I would have left over I would spend on CD-Rs to burn stuff I'd downloaded from Napster (with my 56kps dial-up modem - good times) or to copy CD I'd borrowed from someone. This compilation of songs from a 50s & 60s boxset my mom had was the third CD I ever burned. Hence the titled "Oldies (3)" . For ...

  • THIS IS ITALY. UNFORTUNATELY.
    - Frequenze movie - Il record di 24 Hour Party People è salvo e intoccabile.

  • Louie, Louie; de The Kingsmen.
Algunos ya estamos haciendo nuestros planes para este verano. ¿Playa? ¿Montaña? Lo típico. Pero no una a nivel comercial, sino una canción personal, una que me acompañará a todos los lugares que vaya en [...]
