  • Pure Bathing Culture :: "Silver's Shore Lake ..
    Justin Vernon 's "Beth/Rest" changed everything in 2011. It was suddenly and completely acceptable for an artist to make music that sounded like it belonged in the closing credits of the Karate Kid franchise. Vernon, for his part, doubled-down on the artistic choices, the Michael McDonald guitars and piano, the saxophone, calling it, "the most important song on the record" and bristling at questions of style and substance. It was the last song on the record that would help Vernon win a Grammy. It was weird and, somehow, it was both good and fine. Pure Bathing Culture , a wonderful ...

  • Late Night: The Beach Boys
    Last night, pop legends The Beach Boys stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to promote their new album That's Why God Invented the Radio and their 50th anniversary tour. It's the first time in decades that two of the main Beach Boys, Mike Love and Brian Wilson, have reunited, and they'll be performing together on a surprisingly massive tour through the summer. Watch the constantly weird Wilson and jovial Love chat with Fallon about harmonizing, getting karate chopped by Elvis, and even d

    Filed under: Video , Exclusive , RPM , New Music , New Releases The Sleepover Party Manchester, U.K. synth-pop duo Futurecop! 's "The Only Way" video begins fittingly, with a reference to now-defunct production company Orion pictures ( RoboCop, Terminator) , then takes us to Norwalk, C.A.'s Golf N' Stuff, where '80's classic The Karate Kid was filmed. Our hero, Eric Isenhower ("Parks and Recreation"), is typically late, according to his disgruntled boss Jon Lajoie (Taco from "The League), but he puts some shades on a mannequin, and unwittingly transforms the mini golf course into a solo dance party starring cult film ...

  • Beach Boys on 'Fallon': Band Performs Three ..
    Filed under: News Alexandra Wyman, Getty Images Brian Wilson is rock's ultimate survivor, and if anyone can be forgiven for showing a little emotional wear and tear, it's him. Last night, the fragile Beach Boys frontman joined bandmate Mike Love on Jimmy Fallon 's couch, where they chatted with the " Late Night " TV host about their iconic group's reunion tour and album. Love did most of the talking, ensuring fans that Brian's arranging and harmonizing skills are as strong as ever, but Wilson stole the segment with a classic story about being karate chopped by Elvis ...

  • Tenacious D - "Live @ Brixton Academy" (2002 ..
    I'm on a total Tenacious D high at the moment, hope you don't mind. They killed on the Nerdist podcast recently , they got a new killer album coming out, and I've been rocking both albums and both DVDs like a muddafugga. Their first DVD, The Complete Masterworks , was released in 2003 and contained all six 15 minute episodes (or all three half hour episodes, depending on how you look at it) of their HBO show, music videos and documentaries and a live concert taped at London's Brixton Academy on November 3rd 2002 whilst touring the world ...

    Hype Williams / Gatekeeper / BODYGUARD / White Car The Echoplex; Los Angeles, CA [04-25-2012] by Nathan Shaffer on 04-26-2012 An introduction : You know you’re in for a long night when you step outside for a drink and, immediately, hear the man in the suit jacket, vest, and Burzum shirt ask loudly, in good faith, “I’m not a hipster, am I?” The short answer : Oh, fuck me. +1 : I took my fiancée with me. Although she was unfamiliar with the performing artists, she has a high tolerance, and sincere appreciation, for difficult music. And although she was exhausted, from both work ...

  • Video(s) of the Week!
    Because I'm indecisive and because both these videos are awesome there are two videos this week. "Marathon Runner" by Yellow Ostrich is quite a bizarre video, yet there's something about it that makes you keep watching. They take a hint from Collective">Animal Collective in the production of this video with the ambiguous plot line and short takes. As one youtube user says, "It's quite simple. They're karate ninja children guarding the sacred milk." See for yourself... "Black Girls" by Chester French couldn't be a more different video. With the aesthetic qualities of a glossy ...

  • Ralph Macchio To Play Screenwriter Joe Stefa ..
    It's not easy being a child star of the '80s. Few have made it into adulthood without drugs, audience disinterest or mismanagement sidelining their careers or halting any momentum they might've had. And in some cases, you turn into the pod person that was formerly Kirk Cameron. But for Ralph Macchio, he's avoided the tabloid headlines of some of his contemporaries, and fallen largely into a path that sees him riffing on his former celebrity. But he's lined up a role that could be a nice entry into more serious roles, or just a reminder that ...

  • Lockout, The Raid, and Facebook.
    Pack it up, pack it in, this Drive-in Speakerbox blog is about to begin. This weekend we were blessed by the unexpected presence of the much-hyped Indonesian martial arts actioner The Raid: Redemption. Bullets flew almost as fast as the fists and the techno-whumpy score. It was intense, and lacked the obviously-choreographed "delicacy" of most films of this ilk. The action was hilariously brutal and had an accompanying sense of unease and tension I don't usually experience from watching face punches. Lockout , on the other hand, was as forgettable a film that I'd watch and forget on Netflix ...
