  • Grant Tilly - The World Keeps Passing By (20 ..
Sometimes there's an album that really sneaks up on you. You pop it in without any expectations and you slowly but surely fall for its the charms. That's definitely the case with Toronto-based, Calgary-born folk singer/songwriter Grant Tilly's forthcoming record The World Keeps Passing By. It's the songwriting that stands out with Tilly. His lyrics are thoughtful and unpretentious. He's honest without being sappy or laden down with self-pity. This alone sets him apart in the all-too earnest world of folk music. A dash of humour adds to the charm. After all, who can ...

  • More Finds from the WDVX Vaults
On Friday, I told you about the thousands and thousands of CDs I got to sort through in my Program Director's office last week at WDVX.  I shared a few of my finds with you then, and I'd like to share a few more of them here today. Rebecca Pronsky - Departures & Arrivals As I mentioned here last month , Brooklyn native Rebecca Pronsky's new record Viewfinder  comes out on Tuesday.  I've been digging that recording for over a month already, and I was very pleased to find a copy of her 2007 release Departures & Arrivals  in one ...

  • Justin Rutledge's Foray into Acting Informs ..
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Awards , Junos Six Shooter/Warner Justin Rutledge stands on the stage coolly picking a rockabilly lick on his acoustic guitar. A beautiful blonde woman struts towards him, loosens his tie, slips it over his head, and plants a wet and lingering kiss on his mouth. Rutledge is a good-looking guy and he writes sensitive folk songs. Undoubtedly, his music has set the hearts of women fluttering, but for all its passion, this kiss is scripted. This past February, Justin Rutledge made his theatrical debut in 'Divisadero,' the stage adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's novel. During the ...

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music Kristin Burns The members of Early Winters aren't exactly neighbors. So when British singer-songwriter Carina Round , Canadian artist Justin Rutledge , L.A. Producer Dan Burns and Pedestrian bassist Zac Rae decided to form this talented group, they had to figure out a way to get everyone in the room at the same time. Through the magical powers of the Internet and Skype, Early Winters were able to compose their self-titled debut despite oceans of separation. The distance isn't apparent on the intimate recording of 'Tough Love,' with its steady bass line carrying ...

  • Concert Review: NQ Arbuckle with the Warped ..
I was in dire need of a rock and roll soul cleanse, so I headed out to the Horseshoe last night to catch a few of my favorite locals acts. I had a late conference call, so I missed opener The Matthews Brothers , but made it just as The Warped 45s started their set. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Horseshoe was at about three-quarters capacity. Lots of fans out to support the local acts, plus a bunch of grumpy Leafs fans, with a few noticeably double fisting bottles of beer. The Warped 45s played a 50 minute ...

  • Justin Rutledge On Words, Hawksley Workman A ..
08/06/10 2:20pm by Kate Harper (CHARTattack) Justin Rutledge studied English literature and majored in modern poetry at the University Of Toronto, and nowhere can you see that more than on his latest album, The Early Widows . The Polaris Music Prize long listed disc is based on Michael Ondaatje's Divisadero novel, and centres on a character called Cooper, who doesn't have much of a part in the book. Rutledge, who's currently working with Ondaatje on a stage production that's also based on Divisadero , spoke to CHARTattack about working with longtime friend Hawksley Workman on ...

07/28/10 4:37pm by Kate Harper (CHARTattack) Kate Harper As a musician, it's pretty easy to get caught in a songwriting and recording formula and make pretty similar albums throughout your career. So Justin Rutledge says he wanted to "shake things up a bit" when it came time to make his fourth album, the recently released and Polaris Music Prize long listed The Early Widows . The album is based on Michael Ondaatje's Divisadero novel, and Rutledge began writing its songs while working on a stage production with Ondaatje that's based on the same work. Making ...
