Julianna Barwick

Julianna Barwick

Lacking definable lyrics, Julianna’s songs create their own themes sonically and leave nameless emotional impressions. Julianna’s talents as a vocalist push most of the musical strength in the album, her choice of melodic vocal overdubs with vocal percussion is fascinating and dizzyi... Read More

  • Interview: Schmoozing with Sharon Van Etten. ..
Lingering a smidgen of oblique street beyond the odious ostentation of Regent Street lies Liberty. Probably the finest shop of this fair city yet one that is somewhat inexplicably, somehow, in some way humble it therefore serves as a quite apposite location at which to first encounter Sharon Van Etten . For like Liberty, she is the lusciously remarkable gem lodged barely beneath the bloodthirsty claw of the mainstream – or indeed right beneath the nose of the maddening crowds beyond these practically antiquated, single-glazed shutters. "I never wanna shop but then when I go out, it's like 'danger zone'", she ...

  • FRKWYS Vol. 9: Sun Araw & M. Geddes Gengras ..
Whether it be Nick Zinner vibing in Etiopia or Damon Albarn tripping out with the likes of Kwes., Actress and Richard Russell in the Democratic Republic of the Congo the concept of hurling propulsive musical spearheads out into grounds scarcely blemished by the guilt-burdened weight of the so-called Western world is incontestably en vogue contemporarily. Subversive indie RVNG (the discographic home to ravetastic NYC duo Blondes) has united previously acquainted experimentalists Cameron Stallones (aka  Sun Araw ) and M. Geddes Gengras  with legendary reggae stalwarts The Congos  for the ninth and perhaps most notable volume of their FRKWYS series , alumni of ...

  • Music: Music Review: Sun Araw & M. Geddes Ge ..
The goal of the RVNG label’s FRKWYS series—the name nods to the Folkways label founded in the late 1940s by Moses Asch to document obscure folk and world music—is to unite older musicians with their younger aesthetic offspring in order to foster a trans-generational musical dialogue between like minds. Recent projects have paired experimental psych-rock duo Blues Control with new-age music pioneer Laraaji, and young vocal-collagist Julianna Barwick with no-wave trailblazer Ikue Mori . For Icon Give Thank , the ninth installment in the ongoing FRKWYS series, contemporary Los Angeles-based producers/musicians M. Geddes Gengras and Cameron Stallones (the ...

  • Wot's hot and wot's not
Get the measure kids. Welcome to the compost heap guide to what's hot and what's not. Because I have no graphic skills, you will have to imagine a picture of a tape measure or thermometer going up the right hand side of the screen. Sorry. You might worry to find something you think is HOT in the NOT column. First; for shame, you unfashionable goose. But hang in there, it will arbitrarily switch to the HOT column in a couple of weeks. Getting it right: when treading that fine line between sophisticated and silly headgear, remember colour blocking ...
