  • Ned Said: Six Bands To Watch in 2012
2011 is barely in the rear-view mirror, but it’s time to start thinking about what kind of music awaits us in 2012. Although it’s tough to predict who might burrow into our ears over the next 12 months, it won’t stop me from trying to pick a few acts that might be worth checking out that might be off your radar. Who knows, maybe you’ll be able to say you loved ‘em when! Here are a few bands, from A to Z, that are worth keeping an eye on for 2012: Alabama Shakes No band left ...

  • Hands & Teeth: "Hunting Season" (album revie ..
With a critically-acclaimed EP under their belts, Hands & Teeth have generated a lot of buzz for their debut full length album.   Hunting Season  will be released by the Toronto quinteet on January 17th. The record does not disappoint.  It's dripping with delicious melodies and beautiful harmonies.  The gorgeous loungy chanteuse turn on "Le Petit Voleur" is absolutely enchanting. The arrangements are gritty and introspective, without ever sounding unpolished.  One listen to the guitar at the end of "All That Was" will have you wondering how they could accomplish that.  There's a dark rumble on "Sound of Hamilton", that ...

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive , New Releases M Barnes On stage, Broken Social Scene alumnus Jason Collett watches apprehensively as Canadian celebrity chef Michael P. Clive mixes brown sugar, nutmeg, sliced bananas, and a generous helping of rum in a sizzling saucepan. Moments later, he sets flame to the concoction generating a spectacular fireball. "Does anyone else smell burning hair?" Clive jokes as he tops tiny cups of vanilla ice cream with the flambé and begins serving members of the salivating crowd. The dish is Bananas Foster, a holiday classic usually prepared in fine dining establishments than on ...

  • Northern Exposure: Danielle Duval, 'Control' ..
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Northern Exposure Danielle Duval Danielle Duval might be a new name on the Canadian music scene, but if her long roster of musical collaborations is anything to go by, the young Montreal singer-songwriter has had some pretty impressive peer influences, indeed. Even before releasing her debut album 'Of the Valley' last month, she lent her vocals to tracks by Sam Roberts , Jason Collett , and the Golden Dogs. Duval shares a similar retro-tinged roots-rock vibe with all of the above, so it makes perfect sense that she enlisted Carlin Nicholson and Mike O'Brien of Collett's ...

  • Introducing: Bahamas
Finnish-Canadian singer/songwriter Alfie Jurvanen coasts along a lackadaisical wave that always seems to gently toss him to success. He's toured fairly extensively as a sideman with artists like Howie Beck, Jason Collett, and Zeus. Most recently, he toured as the guitarist/keyboardist for Feist and returned home to Barrie, Ontario to find that all his old cronies had moved on musically. He ended up recording his own stuff simply because he had recording equipment at his disposal and, just from
