It's time to get in touch with my feminine side today, so Ive made a mini-playlist of four ladies that, either on their own or out front of a band, are belting out some amazing tunes leading up to special releases in 2012. First up is a band that I haven't mentioned before, which is strange because their band tee is my fave t-shirt of all time. Erika Wennerstrom fronts Heartless Bastards , a brooding garage country band (having been compared to Crazy Horse, Neil Young, The Black Keys and more) who brought out a pretty amazing album in ...

  • Lower Dens – ‘Brains’
I’m not 100% sure if I’ve consciously listened to Lower Dens before (I’ve a feeling Liz Pelly may have played a few tracks for me when she interned for State in 2010) but the Baltimore band fronted by Jana Hunter … Read More... →

  • Douglas Martin’s Dirty Shoes: Lower Dens – “ ..
Douglas Martin has returned after finally climbing to the top of Mt. Vesuvius. Wherein Jana Hunter and her road dogs take a ride on the Autobahn and come back with gold. Twin-Hand Movement was shoegaze guitars and sock-hop songwriting. Here, the Baltimore quartet reaches their same textural brilliance through understated rhythms, “Believer” synths, and sampler… Continue reading »

  • Lower Dens – “Brains”
Nootropics will be the second outing for the Jana Hunter led Lower Dens. Coming off the well received debut Twin Hand Movement, the Baltimore based group get the ball rolling quickly with the building lead single “Brains.” Running up hill nonstop on a constant drum beat, Lower Dens are looking up and showing huge signs [...]

  • Lower Dens – Brains
Usually when I see something titled “Brains,” zombies quickly come to mind.  Unfortunately, Jana Hunter and the Lower Dens’ take on “Brains” has nothing to do with zombies.  But the song does merit plenty of attention.  The group just announced via Facebook and Twitter that they’ve finished up their sophomore release, Nootropics.  “Brains” is the [...]

  • Lower Dens – Brains

  • Lower Dens to Release New Album
Lower Dens will release a new album, Nootropics, on April 30th (May 1st in the U.S.). Their previous album, 2010′s excellent Twin-Hand Movement, was brimming with nocturnal atmospheres, rhythmic ambiance, and lulled guitars — perfect for autumn, I thought at the time. Winter is just as applicable for front-woman Jana Hunter’s sound though. Her infusion

  • Lower Dens Lifting Us Higher.
While the above artwork accompanying the below stream of  Lower Dens' forthcoming single Brains may suggest a seismic shift in the Baltimore outfit's general interests and genuine intentions (a veer towards stadium-shaped arenas of the hopelessly soulless perhaps), any such trepidation is soon allayed as Jana Hunter's inimitably comforting baritone soothes through the core of five rock-solid minutes. Perhaps more abstract than the material encased within beauteous debut full-length Twin-Hand Movement (transhumanism now apparently accounts for a paramount influence), they remain as dynamic, diligent, and serenely efficient as ever, Nate Nelson's clicking hi-hats propelling vague washes of ...

  • Lower Dens: "Brains"
Jana Hunter and her Baltimore band Lower Dens return today with "Brains", taken from their upcoming second album,  Nootropics . "Brains" maintains the band's atmospheric character, but swaps some of Twin-Hand Movement 's raw texture for a crisply produced motorik feel. Over the sturdy beat and quivering electronics, a mantric vocal transforms the dense track into something that feels both hopeful and epic. The album is set for release on May 1 in the U.S. and elsewhere on April 30 via Ribbon Music , the Domino -affiliated label that recently signed Black Dice and released the latest John Maus record ...
