Live Review: FLRL feat. Guerre and Yannis + ..The best things in life are free. This night was free. It was one of the best things in life. Ok, that’s not the soundest logic but I won a free beer earlier and saw some great live music for free so I’m trying to riff on this theme. Besides it was actually pretty damn amazing. The Flinders Hotel, a cosy little corner pub off Oxford Street, puts on really ace Sydney musicians every Tuesday for nada. Tonight we were were lucky enough to have a selection of top Sydney talent. We also work for a living (Mark works at Guildhall school of music, Bob works for a charity, Martin is a phlebotomist, Olly is a picture researcher and Charlie is a recording engineer and music producer). It’s like a tie-dyed Teddy Boy and very much the product of the current vogue for gleeful splicing pop music’s past with whatever was laying close to hand. Come Save Me skips around, all hand claps and harmonies and big Phil Spector production, but, crafty blighter that it is, doesn’t collapse into a horrible mess of styles.
