  • Michael Imperial – Feenin
This Ashanti song really isn’t very good. ‘Still On It’, released in 2005, came after what I consider to be the high-point of her career (involvement with Ja Rule and R Kelly on 2004′s ‘Wonderful‘ – so good that I crashed my bike into a car jamming to it back in the day) but before [...]

  • Get Rich Or Die Laughing! 50 Cent's 10 Funni ..
Who would have guessed back in 2002, back when 50 Cent was releasing menacing songs like "Back Down" and “What Up Gangsta,” that one day we would see a pic of the rapper in a hospital bed surrounded by stuffed animals?! PHOTOS: Inside 50 Cent's Hospital Room!  It happened yesterday when 50 tweeted pictures of himself in the hospital before he was scheduled to go under the knife. Of course the picture wasn't meant to be taken seriously — the pic is just the latest example of 50 Cent clowning around.  DETAILS: 50 Cent Reveals How Bieber Became A ...

  • COVER THE EARTH: Bizarro Versions of Your Fa ..
There are lots of foreign-language covers out there, but what really intruiges me is when non-Anglo/Americans approach the material from their own ethnic/cultural background.  Sometimes it's kinda clueless, like the South African group who sound like they really don't know their rockabilly (tho I'm sure they know rock better then most Americans know mbaqanga), while others are clearly going for a cross-over audience, e.g. the " chutney " version of Arrow's soca classic "Feelin' Hot Hot Hot": East Indians go to the West Indies. I'm pretty sure the Bappi Lahiri track was no more ...

  • Scratch Candy
Would't want to call this one a Black Ark classic exactly, but it's cool to hear a forgotten Scratch production just the same. Inglan -born miss McKenzie was flown in with high hopes by Chris Blackwell's Island label to record her debut in Perry">Lee Perry's famed Trenchtown studio, but what she found was a wizard pretty much at the end of his tether. Which is probably why the resulting, rather tepid-sounding tracks remained in the vault for decades, except for two songs that got a very limited local release on Perry's own label. For ...

There was a time when I thought that Jay-Z, X and Ja Rule coming together to form Murder Inc. was one of the best things to happen for NYC Hip-Hop since 2-for-1 $.50 loosies. • Jah Wobble Dissects 'Metal Box'
Jah Wobble has spoken to ClashMusic about his upcoming London show 'Metal Box In Dub'. On its release, 'Metal Box' split fans and alienated critics. Drawing on dub, free jazz and more, Public Image Limited finally removed themselves from the 'punk' tag and surged forward into uncharted waters. Now viewed as a seminal release, 'Metal Box' has had a strange old journey. Original PiL members Jah Wobble and Keith Levene joined forces recently for a daring re-interpretation of the album, re-tooled as 'Metal Box In Dub'. Heading to London venue the Village Underground on May 25th, 'Metal Box In Dub ...

  • Unusual Instruments: Jah Light
Pablo">Augustus Pablo : Jah Light [ purchase ] The melodica, also known as the blow-organ or the key-flute, was long regarded as a children's toy and not much more. Minimal music composer Steve Reich was one of the first ones to use it as a 'serious' instrument, while the odd jazz cat had fun with it, too. But it was Jamaica-born Horace Swaby, better known as Pablo">Augustus Pablo, who made the melodica really respectable. In his able hands, the instrument came alive and added an ethereal, far eastern and sometimes almost otherwordly atmosphere to many a roots and dub classic.

  • Seen Kevin Macdonald's Marley biopic? Here's ..
From Kingston to Lewisham, here are five other must-see reggae movies The Harder They Come (Dir. Perry Henzell, Jamaica, 1972) Jamaica's first feature, and the one against which others are measured. The plot – poor country boy seeks fortune in city – is archetypal, but Henzell cleverly turns our admiration for hero Ivan ( Jimmy Cliff in incendiary form) into revulsion, as the film shifts through melodrama, comedy and musical into tragedy. Immortal movie moments – "You think the hero can be dead before the last reel?" scoffs Ivan at one point – and a stunning soundtrack led by Cliff's title song make ...
