  • Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan :: Deus Ibi E ..
    The atmospheric baritone. Next to Nick Cave and Tom Waits, Mark Lanegan possesses one of the few contemporary voices capable of a kind of subliminal storytelling that exists outside the realm of pure vocabulary. It’s a vocal delivery that carries with it a certain gravitas, one that informs each vowel and every consonant. A voice [...]

  • BEST OF 2011 (marco)
    - Frequenze album duemilaundici (Marco Rota) - TOP 10 ALBUM 2011 1- Richard Warren “The Wayfarer” (TV Records) Se Johnny Cash fosse stato un crooner, avrebbe cantato e suonato così. Visionario e meraviglioso. 2- The Black Keys “El Camino” (Nonesuch) Lo inserisco al secondo posto solo perchè sono al secondo ascolto. Al terzo ascolto risalirebbe tranquillamente di una posizione. The Black Keys inarrestabili. 3- Wu Lyf “Go Tell Fire To The Mountain” (LyF)  Nonostante infinite differenze, io li associo ai The National (credo per la sezione ritmica), ma con un cantato decisamente fuori dal comune e ruvido. O piacciono e li si ...

  • Jono McCleery - There Is
    This album had me from track 1. Jono McCleery strikes an excellent balance between vocal control and letting himself go to maintain the soulfulness. Picture the vocals of James Blake, but thicker, against the backdrop of Bonobo's earlier jazzy lo-fi albums (whom McCleery recently supported) and you've got a basic idea of this debut. These are the obvious comparisons, but the London based solo artist brings an originality to the table. The manipulation of sound and electronic elements of the music are played down and subtle, resulting in an underlying haunting mood beneath a Patrick Watson come Alexi ...

  • Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan + The Ghost H ..
    It was a cold and wet winter night that saw me heading down to Fremantle's Fly By Night for the last night of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan 's Australian tour (and their current touring schedule all together). What followed was a gig which was both intense, atmospheric... and at times intensely awkward. read more

  • Feature: Report: Splendour 2011 Day 2
    Perfect 10 performances from Gareth Liddiard and The Grates, strange timetabling decisions and disappointing sets from Mona and The Mars Volta – ANDREW MCMILLEN reports on a musically inconsistent day two of Splendour In The Grass in Woodfordia, Queensland. But, hey, at least the weather was good. Photos by JUSTIN EDWARDS . All weekend, the weather is a dream. It couldn't be better. It's so good that you tend not to notice the clear skies, and instead take it for granted. There isn't a moment of rain, which makes for happy camping. First on the Mix Up stage are ...

  • ISOBEL CAMPBELL & MARK LANEGAN @ LANCASTER L ..
    Mark Lanegan survived hard drugs. Isobel Campbell survived Belle and Sebastian. Together since 2006, this odd couple pairing have now made three albums of superior Lee-and-Nancy torch ballads. Tonight their short Latitude Festival warm-up tour made a stop at the unlikely setting of Lancaster Library . The Get It Loud In Libraries initiative is about getting young people into their local libraries I presume. I don’t know how successful it is (and there weren’t too many youngsters in for this particular show) but it promotes an impressive range of bands and also provides a fantastic opportunity to see artists ...

    Duke Raoul  // 14th July 2011 Launching their debut EP, Brighton’s own Duke Raoul showcase their twing-pronged sound of ethereal electronic dreaminess and smartly-constructed rock, unafraid to shy away from a catchy chorus. Big things are expected yadda yadda yadda, but forget all that: This is rock with a brain which knows its way around a melody. And if that wasn’t enough, it’s all taking place at Brighton’s newest, not-pay-a-penny venue, Green Door Store, and is followed by the stellar cock-rock night, Paradise City. Get involved. • MANCHESTER GIGS IN MUSIC: July 2011 Pt.1
    Summer’s here and gigs thin out as festival season approaches but there’s still plenty to choose from. Tonight alone there are four gigs all worth catching on featured on this month’s mixtape: Julie Baenziger aka Sea of Bees makes her (I reckon) fourth Manchester appearance this year already, this time headlining at the Deaf Institute; at Dulcimer in Chorlton, Wooden Wand is playing (latest album "Death Seat" on Young God Records ); there’s a new band night at Night & Day including Deadwall from Leeds (subject of yesterday’s post ) and in Fuel in Withington Mcr Scenewipe are hosting their monthly FREE gig night with four bands including another welcome Yorkshire visitor Just Handshakes (We’re British) . Also this month is Manchester International Festival with its Björk residency and separate strand of gigs including some local bands getting (hopefully) a bigger stage including Plank! , Air Cav , Golden Glow and Young British Artists . Plus Wu Lyf in a tunnel; more exciting is that support for this is Dirty Beaches . As ever a mixtape [58 mins / 64 MB ...

  • Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan Shows
    Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan are due to play a short burst of shows around the UK. It really shouldn't have worked. When Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan first sat down to write songs together, fans held their breath due to the wildly contrasting backgrounds of the pair. Yet the partnership has proved to be robust. Releasing a string of albums and one EP, Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan have specialised in a dark, brooding sense of Americana forged from an implicit understanding of each other's talents. Releasing their new album 'Hawk' last year, Isobel Campbell and Mark ...
