Out now on Speak N Spell via Inertia, In Your Room was Recorded at 301 Studios in Sydney with guitarist Mike Morgan, who recently joined the band full-time. It was mastered at Air Studios in London by Ray Staff (Muse, David Bowie, Nick Cave). Since forming in 2008, the ...

  • THE CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA – Presents In Motion ..
(Ninja Tune/Inertia) UK’s premier filmic collective and assorted friends get mellow Since releasing their breakthrough LP Ma Fleur in 2007, The Cinematic Orchestra haven’t put much music to tape apart from a couple low-key tracks on the near-requisite (and in their case, exquisite) Late Night Tales compilation three years ago. Chief ideologist/sample king Jason Swinscoe, however, wasn’t intent to keep the band resting on their laurels; thus, we get a long-awaited new release under the iconic ‘ ...

  • WILDING – Bird’s Bread
(Laughing Outlaw Records/Inertia) Melbourne dandy gets produced by a boat person From the opening bars of Justin Wilding Stokes’ new album Bird’s Bread, it’s clear the ex-Brisbane Melbournian has lots of love for Carnaby Street psych-pop by the likes of The Kinks and The Zombies. Impressively, most of the instrumentation on this record was played by Stokes himself, alongside the album’s producer, none other than fellow former Brisbanite Robin Waters of local melody masters The Boat People. So ...

  • Loyal Divide – ‘Vision Vision’
Over the years, the One A Day search beagles have employed a variety of methods by which to sniff out the best music on the planet. It’s graduated from word of mouth through to surprise support bands, festival tip-offs, niche blogs, Twitter recommendations, emails from record label PRs (thankyou Dew Process, Remote Control and Inertia) [...]

  • HERE WE GO MAGIC – A Different Ship
(Secretly Canadian/Inertia) Beauty and Brains The first two songs on A Different Ship lead you in two very different directions. Into is a clattering, darkly echoing instrumental (though I couldn’t tell you what any of the instruments are. At one point it sounds like someone’s torturing a cow). Then there’s Hard To Be Close; the band claims this album is about the difficulties of intimacy and the claustrophobia in closeness, and the theme is most closely examined in this track. It kicks off wi ...

  • Friday Cover Up - Humanoids Get Super Sedate ..
I'm not sure what you guys will think of this. Hell, I'm not even sure I like it. But the premise of the Friday Cover Up has always been to highlight versions of songs that are infinitely different, or that the band makes their own. This version of the Ramones' classic is certainly the former. However, Superhumanoids are a band well-versed in crafting weird soundscapes that defies categorisation, so really any track they attack will be skewed into some other beast altogether. This track is offers dreamy inertia - the sedation is well and truly in effect. The best ...

  • If Not Inertia, Ergo - Albums
This wildly experimental electro-acoustic ensemble, led by trombonist, composer and computer maven Brett Sroka and featuring guitarist Mary Halvorson, drummer Shawn Baltazor and keyboardist Sam Harris, concocts some strangely compelling music. From the droning, Terry Riley-inspired loops of “Sorrows of the Moon” to the exquisite music-box pointillism of “Two for Joy” and the free-jazz vehicle “Little Shadow,” nothing is predictable or tame on If Not Inertia . Adding to the sense of creative daring, the leader whistles an ominous theme on the droning title track, and Halvorson unleashes a torrent of pitch-shifted notes, fretboard skronking and feedback squalls on the dense ...

  • BEACH HOUSE – Bloom
(Mistletone/Inertia) Baltimore duo stick with what works Beach House have been arguably one of the most consistent bands of recent times. Duo Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally have made a string of excellent, if very similar, albums of synth-heavy, chilled-out love songs. 2010’s Teen Dream was a step up in production values and emotional weight. Full of lovesick melancholy, it was many a person’s makeout soundtrack of choice for that year. Bloom is a much sparser album, and feels like a comedow ...

  • THE DANDY WARHOLS – This Machine
(The End Records/Inertia) Neo-psych stalwarts at their most clear-eyed In Pitchfork’s fifth successive negative review of a Dandy Warhols release, the would-be tastemakers gripe about new record This Machine, asserting that as the four-piece are neither mainstream stars nor blog-indie favourites, they are essentially a redundant force. However, the group has never seemed too concerned about fitting into particular boxes. Even though they haven’t come close to topping their career highlight (t ...

  • FATHER JOHN MISTY – Fear Fun
(Sub Pop/Inertia) Folksy vagabond continues his journey The debut release of ex-Fleet Foxes and Saxon Shore drummer Joshua Tillman under the kooky pseudonym Father John Misty is an expedition through the foothills of folksy balladry. Tillman has been releasing solo albums since 2003 and Fear Fun is an extrapolation of these solo efforts. It’s a fleshier sound than his previous releases and builds on the persona of the rustic and unassuming storyteller that Tillman has constructed himself to be ...
