Popular standard “Autumn Leaves” covered by The Bird and the Bee I can’t have a cover week without The Bird and the Bee. They’re great at it and they seem to enjoy reinterpretation more than the average band (they have an entire album of Hall and Oates covers!). Plus, it seems a crime to forgo mentioning that Inara George has the voice of a goddess.

  • Joachim Cooder
Winter/Spring 2009 marked a very important moment for me. For the first time I actively began to seek out new music and trust the full album instead of letting it passively come to me through singles via friends, radio, television, etc. I’ll never forget when I woke up on January 27th, got out of bed, got dressed, quickly bought  Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future  without any worries as to whether I’d like it or not,   and hurried to class. I’ve featured   The Bird and the Bee before but to me they’re always worth ...

  • Week 43: White Hinterland (Kairos)
Music has always been a driving force and medium in which women can exhibit just how powerful the female mind truly is. There are so many female musicians I admire: Emily Haines (Metric), Emiliana Torrini, Inara George (The Bird and the Bee), Robyn, Mette Lindberg (The Asteroids Galaxy Tour) and so many others. What’s more, it is awe-inspiring to see women completely take the reigns when it comes to their music like today’s featured artist: White Hinterland.  White Hinterland is the stage name of Casey Dienel, a Massachusetts native who now resides in Portland, OR. Dienel entered the ...

  • Bird and the Bee; Interpreting The Masters V ..
Anytime someone utters the phrase “cover song” or “cover version,” most music aficionados cringe and scoff. The idea of someone covering a “classic” usually ends up with a song temporarily being ruined by an artist. One of my favorite all-time songs is “We’re Not Gonna Take It” by Twisted Sister and every cover version I have ever heard has been beyond awful. Luckily, there are plenty of songs that are arguably just as good, if not, better than the original like Guns N’ Roses’ version of “Live and Let Die” (Paul McCartney), Ant Farm">Alien Ant Farm’s version ...

  • Cover version of the week: "I Can't Go For T ..
Last year, this duo produced an entire album of Hall & Oates covers and here's one I can definitely go for, especially when they sing that bridge: "I would do almost anything that you want me too-oo-oo." Plus, the very pregnant Inara George manages to shake it quite nicely here.

  • The Daily Swarm Interview: The Legendary Van ..
The Daily Swarm : On my way to Van Dyke Parks’ house, I stopped at a newly-opened record store in Atwater Village to thumb through whatever albums of his they had in stock. First I checked under “V,” then under “D,” then under “P” – most record stores don’t seem to know where to stock him. Is Van Dyke Parks a band? A person? After a career that spans nearly fifty years and includes celebrated partnerships with Brian Wilson, Harry Nilsson, Joanna Newsom, and Inara George, we still don’t quite know where Van Dyke Parks belongs… Read and comment. • Living Sisters, Zooey Deschanel Honor Patsy ..
With her pathos-deep contralto somewhere between a yodel and a croon, Patsy Cline delivered indelible songs about never being satisfied with the one you're with — or never being with the one who satisfies you. She didn't write the tunes (except for a couple), but she made them, exhaling them full of desire and sorrow. Almost 50 years after the Nashville legend died in a plane crash, with a mere three decades under her belt, her cheating-heart recordings are still jukebox classics today, and an all-star line-up including the Living Sisters, John C. Reilly, Zooey Deschanel, and others came ...
