Hooded Fang

Canada

In the winter of 2008, six friends, roommates, and lovers decided to start playing music together. Inspired by Canadian literary genius Mordecai Richler – and undeterred by their lack of formal training or the fact that “Barney’s Version” is a shitty name for a band – they settled on... Read More

Single of the Week! Here We Go Magic - ‘How Do I Know’ (Secretly Canadian) ‘How Do I Know’ is infectiously plotted, it has the sort of urgent tempo, quietly chugging bassline and itchy keyboard lines that put you in mind of blinking strob Read the full story on DrownedinSound.com

  • The Great Escape 2012 // The 405 Review
The 405 team was out in force for The Great Escape this year, so rather than bringing you a band-by-band account of our time in Brighton, our editors/writers have chosen their five favourite bands from the event. Who came out on top? Read on to find out... Photos by Tim Boddy James Canham Swords">Forest Swords - Tim and myself arrived partway through Swords">Forest Swords set (they started at the same time AlunaGeorge finished) to a stunned and mostly silent crowd. The two of them on stage (one at the mic, laptop and electronics and another on the bass ...

  • Live At Leeds 2012 // The 405 Review
On Saturday May 5th, The 405 headed down (well...up) to Leeds to cover Live At Leeds festival, which is a multi-venue city festival full of relatively new bands such as Novella, all the way through to big hitters such as Los Campesinos! (or Example if you fancied buying a separate ticket...which we didn't). With other festivals such as Camden Crawl, Sounds From The Other City, Simple Things and Land of Kings (all of which were city festivals) all taking place on the same weekend, how did LAL hold up? Read on to read about some of the ...

  • Lessons From The Great Escape
The Canadians win at music. We went to three things at the Canadian showcase: Hooded Fang (above), Slow Down Molasses, and Hot Panda, and all three were fucking great.  I know it’s a cliché to say that Canadians seem to be disproportionately good at music, but on this weekend’s evidence, they just are.  Born Gold [...]

  • New Mixtape – Canada At The Great Escape
Some good stuff on this mixtape we've curated, featuring a slew of the Canadian acts set to play the Great Escape next week. Aside from recent Radar tips Hooded Fang and Doldrums (and the all-conquering Grimes of course), there's a hell of a lot to get stuck into – Vancouver/Toronto trio Gold & Youth (above) bring to our minds a more poppy XX, while Eight And A Half sound like a drenched'n'dour Empire Of The Sun. • MANCHESTER GIGS IN MUSIC: May 2012 Pt.1
As if there weren’t enough gigs to miss in a month, May also brings over 100 bands playing three multi-venue city festivals in Manchester and Salford. Starting with Sounds From The Other City this weekend and finishing with the Chorlton Arts Festival Weekender at the end with Future Everything in between. If all goes well I may even get to more than one of these. This month’s mixtape leans more to many of the other gigs across the month including tomorrow night’s highly recommended Richard James gig at The Castle (see yesterday’s post on his latest ...

  • Hooded Fang – Brahma
A lazy slacker of a tune courtesy of a singer who could well fall asleep at any minute and backing music that sounds far too casual to have been produced in a studio that charges by the hour. The truth of course is that such slovenly application takes an age to perfect, in the case [...]

  • SXSW 2012: Day Three
It's Friday and I'm broken. There's still two days left. Oh god. The SXSW novice is finding the going tough and I've started to shout at random people who are rude and talk through gigs. Send help. No, really. It's ok. Because it's like really overwhelming at times. I walked back from the Mohawk stage last night about 1am and was like, OMG - lazer lights, smoke billowing, random piles of stuff everywhere and bodies staggering randomly. It was like a scene out of independence day. Before I got to that part of the night ...
