  • Bass Clef: Reeling Skullways
‘Reeling Skullways’ elevates itself mainly due to its subtlety. There’s no horns blaring, no wob-wob in-yer-face bass ridiculousness and no Day-Glo histrionics. Instead what you get is an album crafted as beautiful machine music with soul – in fact, truckloads of it. Hi-Tek Soul as May">Derrick May would have it. If you know of or [...]

Berlin ...

  • Live Review: Future Music Festival - Ellis P ..
The Future Music Festival , at least for the past few years, has been a decent way to wind up the festival season in Adelaide. Sure, the crowd is generally unfavourable to be around, but there’s usually a good line up of artists to balance the bad with the good. 2012’s festival was a different case altogether; I don’t think I’ve experienced a worse day of live music in a very long time. Arriving at Future Music’s new base at Ellis Park, I found myself in a ridiculously large line which extended from the front gates ...

  • Live Review: Die Antwoord + Kato - Enmore Th ..
It should already be clear by now that there is no other act on this planet that can re-create the unique sounds of South Africa’s rap-rave heroes Die Antwoord . With two very charismatic emcees – Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er - and one extremely talented DJ/producer – DJ Hi-Tek (not the one from Reflection Eternal) - it’s hard not to take interest in the now-established cult figures. As a sideshow to their appearance at this year’s Future Music Festival tour, Die Antwoord took over the Enmore Theatre and stopped at nothing in leaving their mark on the hyperactive crowd. Having ...

  • Book Of Life, Hi-Tech (1996)

The South African trio DJ Hi-Tek, Yo-Landi Vi$er and Ninja, otherwise known as Die Antwoord (Afrikaans for “The Answer”) brought its Zef-style hip hop to the sold-out Club Nokia.  It’s hard not to take your eyes off alien-looking Yo-Landi Vi$er with her tiny pale frame and black contacts.  Instead of selling out to a major record label [...]

  • Music Review: Die Antwoord - Ten$ion
Die Antwoord Ten$ion [Self-Released; 2012] by Nick RS Rating: Ten$ion is not a bad name for a Die Antwoord album. The appeal of the Cape Town hip-hop duo (trio if you count their perpetually identity-shifting beatmaker DJ Hi-Tek) has stemmed from a sort of cultural dissonance, a subversive slant that the internet intelligentsia quickly couched in terms of “performance art” or even Dada. This particular tension boils down to a question of “realness” vs. “falsehood,” a zeitgeisty little dichotomy that an overzealous writer of pop-crit fluff-pieces might slot into other “discussions” of Adele vs. Lady Gaga or Lana ...

• Ten$ion
On their 2010 debut these South African weirdos occasionally struck a sly balance between Ninja's deranged rhymes Yo-Landi Vi$$er's evil-sexpot coos and DJ Hi-Tek's slippery rave-rap beats The novelty runs dry on Die Antwoord's second album a marathon of overwrought beats and clunky horn-dog-rebel boasts Ninja's idea of an anti-hip-hop...
