Modcast #119: Expensive LooksExpensive Looks is the recording name for Alec Feld. Based in New York and completely self-taught, he released his debut LP 'Dark Matters' this year. His music draws on the musical staples of his childhood, from motown to Chicago house to "trashy '90s dance". A Personal History of the Beastie BoysI was a self-censored kid. Permanently unpopular through most of high school I dabbled in a mix of naive romanticism and some sort of Puritanism which American schools give rise to to keep kids from going insane from being permanently unpopular. So it's with little surprise that around my 12th birthday when my parents handed me two cassette tapes, Gloria Estefan's Greatest Hits and Pearl Jam Ten, that I popped in the former and had to literally wear it out before I took up the other tape and my life was changed forever. Live Review: FLRL feat. Guerre and Yannis + ..The best things in life are free. This night was free. It was one of the best things in life. Ok, that’s not the soundest logic but I won a free beer earlier and saw some great live music for free so I’m trying to riff on this theme. Besides it was actually pretty damn amazing. The Flinders Hotel, a cosy little corner pub off Oxford Street, puts on really ace Sydney musicians every Tuesday for nada. Tonight we were were lucky enough to have a selection of top Sydney talent.
