  • Gruff Rhys Royal Festival Hall Show
Gruff Rhys has announced plans for a one off show at the Royal Festival Hall this summer. The solo catalogue of Gruff Rhys is a dense, unforgiving place. However 'Hotel Shampoo' seems to stick out, building a cult following that grows on a near daily basis. Now the Welsh songwriter has decided to underline the album's success by performing it in full this summer. Hitting the Royal Festival Hall, the show on July 6th is part of opera singer Bryn Terfel’s BrynFest celebrations. Performing 'Hotel Shampoo' in full, Gruff Rhys will then play a second set trawling through ...

  • Simian Mobile Disco - Unpatterns
No one would advise the members of Simian Mobile Disco to quit their day-jobs. Okay, so one half of the group, Jas Shaw, isn't up to much during daylight hours, but the "face" of SMD - James Ford - is best known through his work as indie producer to the stars. He's worked with artists as diverse as Beth Ditto, the Arctic Monkeys and Florence and the Machine, and earned himself a nice bit of indie cred through osmosis. It's what the duo do in their beneath the cloak of the night, once the studio is theirs, that remains ...

  • Simian Mobile Disco - Unpatterns
Simian Mobile Disco’s last studio record, 2009’s ‘Temporary Pleasure’, utilised a range of guest vocalists, from Gruff Rhys to Beth Ditto. It’s a tactic they could have done with repeating on ‘Unpatterns’, an album which is crying out for that kind of variation to hold your attention. The hallmarks of Simian Mobile Disco are present - huge beats and house loops take centre-stage - but many of the tracks just feel like they’re missing a vital component. When vocals are featured, they resemble samples from late 20th Century PlayStation music generation games. The individual components sound fantastic, but ...

  • Review: Wilding - Bird's Bread
Originally from Liverpool before moving with his family to Brisbane and later on his own to Melbourne, Justin Wilding Stokes doesn’t stray far from his first home when making music. Previous bands the Whistlestops and Isle of Man made no secret of his love for 1960s British music, but his solo debut as Wilding is positively steeped in Beatles, Beach Boys and Kinks. It taps the most whimsical side of those acts, finding playful instrumentation in kitchen utensils and other offbeat sources. So maybe we know what we’re in for, right from the kazoo and melodica of opener ...

  • Fiction, Keep Shelley In Athens, Ghetts, Spe ..
With the London indie scene gradually moving eastwards toward Stoke Newington, Old Street and Whoreditch, the idea of a crawl around Camden is starting to feel a little antiquated. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the festival’s days are numbered, granted attendance seems a little down on previous years and the line-up didn’t have any killer “I HAVE to go and see that” acts playing; a Florence, a Mobile Disco, a SBTRK even. Actress were this year’s hot ticket but with set times being switched and many gigs not on at the time advertised it became harder ...
