Grouper

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Grouper is the solo project for ambient musician Liz Harris, of Portland, Oregon. Harris’ music is a mixture of softly-strummed guitar, Wurlitzer keys, and her delicate, dreamy vocals, all of which are heavily drenched in reverb. Harris’ first album was 2005’s Grouper, a self-release... Read More

  • Watch: Grouper - Violet Replacement
Months ago, I was listening to a piece on NPR about an artist who had taken Beethoven symphonies and slowed the tempo down far enough to stretch the piece into a 24-hour experience of listening and relaxation. Listeners were invited to bring blankets and pillows to the premiere and immerse themselves in the slow-churning epic for as long as they so desired. Violet Replacement , an hour-and-a-half, two-song tour CD-R set, follows the same idea. But just as a simple violin stroke can be rendered unrecognizable when stretched to fit a new timeline, the Wurlitzer warbles, guitar strums, and field recordings ...

  • YYU
MP3: YYU - yourhands/ moo .3 Really enjoying these mystically gentle tracks from California artist YYU that the good people at Beer on the Rug sent me the other day. "yourhands/ moo .3" captures some of that organic niceness you got with a lot of the post-noise-folk stuff like Grouper or Barn Owl, but complicated things with an admirably schizophrenic approach that approaches Brainfeeder-esque glitchy difficult-ness. TIMETIMETIME&TIME; is out now on Beer on the Rug. buy / soundcloud

  • Karen Gwyer - I've Been You Twice
This is the second entry in Kaleidoscope's ongoing "limited dubs" project, where artists drape effects onto their music as it's recorded directly to tape. Only thirteen copies of Karen Gwyer 's I've Been You Twice will ever exist. Each one is unique, special - and sold, so none of us will ever hear one. What we can listen to, though, are the original digital masters, which Kaleidoscope are giving away for free. Track one is 'No Moondoggies For 3 Weeks', a series of modulating tones, wordless vocals and clipped percussion. It's not ambient, and it's not ...

  • [BadPanda127] Hypermagic – Piffy On A Rock ..
Introducing London’s Hypermagic, a forest of echoes and polychrome phonographic vibrations inspired by acts like Grouper, Emeralds, Do Make Say Think and Teen Daze. Layers of rustic beats, rusty clicks, shrouded voices, kaleidoscope reverbered guitars and rheumatic feedback. After 4 well-received EPs and a full-length (everything on free download) here are new sonic textures and rhytmes [...]

  • Premiere: Ilyas Ahmed - "Skin In Circles" ..
Over the last couple years, Ilyas Ahmed has released a 12-inch with his Portland buddy Liz Harris (Grouper), a split with Steve Gunn, and a 10-inch called Live At On Land , but With Endless Fire is his first full-length release since 2009’s Goner . Our boys at Cerberus just reviewed the cassette version earlier this week ; we recently interviewed Ahmed about the new album here ; and we’re now ecstatic to premiere the video for standout track “Skin In Circles.” The pensive, amorphous footage of lights in the dark and sun through trees/curtains/etc. — by art director Julia Blackburn ...

  • Interview: Ilyas Ahmed
by Lee Michael • May 2012 Since 2005, Ilyas Ahmed has released a slew of fantastic releases, some self-released, others on labels like Root Strata (the amazing Goner ), Digitalis, and Time-Lag. With Endless Fire , his latest in a litany of transcendent art-folk albums, is out now on cassette and LP via Immune Recordings, and it further solidifies his grasp on bleak, yet resplendent territory. Tiny Mix Tapes caught up with Ahmed via email to talk about his compulsive music-making techniques. Check out the interview below and head over to the Chocolate Grinder for a premiere of his new video for “Skin ...

  • Misfit Mod | Cars“Gotta make a move from the ..
Misfit Mod  |  Cars “Gotta make a move from the backseat of this car…” A move to getaway from a pressing situation or a move on someone you like? ‘ Cars ’ might be full of lust - its lyrics suggest as much - but the haunting atmospherics hint at otherwise. Vocals are soft to the touch, and pulse in the background in a similar style to a Grouper track, with Sarah Kelleher overlapping layer upon layer of mystery. Lust or terror, it needn’t matter: So enigmatic and so conscious of its beauty is ‘ Cars ’ that you can’t help but fall under its ...

  • Ocras - ‘Arrow Drawn’ A collaboration betwee ..
Ocras - ‘Arrow Drawn’ A collaboration between Benoît Pioulard and Rafael Anton Irisarri, Ocras was formed when the pair recorded a cover of Broadcast’s ‘Until Then’, a tribute to Trish Keenan upon the event of her sad passing last year. Pioulard is a singer-songwriter with three lo-fi folk-inflected LPs out on Chicago label Kranky. Irisarri is a  post-minimalist composer with two solo records and is a member of Seattle group The Sight Below.  As Ocras,  Pioulard and Irisarri’s musical partnership is an overlap of woodsy roots and ambient space. ‘Arrow Drawn’ is like a Grouper song dismantled and re-assembled ...

  • The Bug Streams New Clip
The Bug is streaming a clip from his new Acid Ragga cut 'Can't Take This No More' - listen to it now. Purveyor of dread fuelled Dancehall, Kevin Martin's project The Bug leant its name to 2008's spectacular long player 'London Zoo'. Recently resurrected, the producer went back into the studio to work on new material. Confirming plans for a series of seven inch releases, The Bug intends to launch his own label. Acid Ragga - a ready-made genre name if ever we heard one - will be inaugurated with the release of 'Can't Take This No More'. Featuring ...
