On the eve of the release of a live DVD and national tour, Drones frontman Gareth Liddiard takes some time out from building a pizza oven to chat with MATT SHEA about getting the band back together, developing new sounds and not listening to rock music anymore. It was starting to get a little lonely without The Drones. September just gone marked three years since the release of Havilah , and while that record’s endless momentum and a couple of solo releases (Gareth Liddiard’s Strange Tourist and Noga">Mike Noga’s The Balladeer Hunter ) have maintained a keen interest ...

I’ve been conducting a little survey the past couple of days, and it seems that the wider opinion is that Grinspoon are a better pub act than a larger venue band... and you know what, I freaking agree. I had the mighty pleasure of seeing them perform at Rock Lily (in Star Casino) with Sydney band ‘Strangers’ last Friday night, and it was insane. read more

  • News: No Dirty Three, Striborg In 'Hottest 2 ..
Triple J music director Richard Kingsmill has revealed the 100 albums that nearly made last month’s Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time – and while it redresses some oversights ( Born Sandy Devotional makes the cut this time at #126) there are still some glaring omissions. Like The Dirty Three and Tasmanian metal legend Striborg, who despite a “viral” campaign by M+N that included Tweets and stickers (pictured), failed to make the cut. There were first-time entries, however, for The Drones ( Wait Long By The River… at #148), The Church ( Starfish at #108), Eddy Current Suppression Ring ( Primary Colours ...

  • Grinspoon - Chemical Heart
Cleaning stuff out is always a fun experience. I don't particularly relish the prospect of attacking the decay, the crumbling reminders of yesteryears that clog my room, at the outset. I've always told my friends that if I was to start over, my room would be totally minimalist, in fitting with my adoration of all things Le Corbusier clean, but as it is, faced with veritable mountains of junk,

  • News: Industry Reacts To Amy Winehouse’s Dea ..
Australia’s music community has taken to Twitter to express their shock and sadness at the passing of Amy Winehouse. The troubled UK soul singer was found dead in her flat in Camden, North London, on Saturday (July 23). She was 27. While Winehouse never toured Australia – there were reportedly several attempts to bring her out – her 2007 album Back To Black went on to sell more than 70,000 copies locally. She was feted over the weekend by a broad cross-section of the industry – from Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson and Megan Washington to host of the recently axed Video ...

  • Splendour Selection #8 - The Living End
So The Living End are back for Splendour 2011. I know what you're thinking. "God damn it Chris Cheney, just get a new party trick for your stage show. Awesome, so you can play guitar with a VB stubbie. I've seen it 4 times now! It's no longer impressive." I was thinking exactly the same thing. The Living End have changed about as much as Grinspoon over the past decade. The only difference is, The Living End actually know how to play their instruments. And music. And I have some respect for the band members. But lets ...

Yesterday’s announcement of the Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time busted open some so-called home truths about our national youth broadcaster. Words, graphs and flimsy assumptions by DARREN LEVIN . There’s nothing like a publicly voted list to fire the shame cauldron up, especially when it’s topped by a Powderfinger album – and a mediocre one at that. While we’re not going to debate the artistic merits of the Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time – our readers have done that particularly well over the past few weeks – there are still many conclusions to be drawn from ...

More than 47,000 triple j listeners have named Powderfinger’s Odyssey Number Five the Hottest Australian Album of All Time. The band’s 2000 album – their fourth – was announced the winner of the national poll on triple j earlier this afternoon (July 10). It beat out the likes of silverchair’s Frogstomp (#2), AC/DC’s Back In Black (#3), The Living End by The Living End (#4) and Gilgamesh by Gypsy & The Cat (#91). It marked Powderfinger’s fourth entry into the poll, with the Internationalist (#6), Vulture Street (#14) and Double Allergic (#41) also making the cut ...
