  • APPROACHING THE AGE OF FIVE (Part 8)
Picked up a 12" copy of this for just 50p not too long ago.  Then I picked up a copy of the LP Waiting , from which the single was lifted, for just £1 the day after in a totally different shop.  Until then I had no idea that David Byrne had been behind the production desk..... Fun Boy Three are a band that don't get the praise they merit in blogland. Maybe it was because they formed from the messy break-up of critically-acclaimed The Specials or maybe it is because Terry Hall would enjoy more success later on his ...

via  ksen : ‘Tain’t What You Do (It’s The Way That You Do It) - Fun Boy Three & Bananarama The opening beat reminds me a little of a softer Violent Femmes’ Gone Daddy Gone . Good song for a sleepy Tuesday at the office; the sort of day you’d rather spend napping and picnicking in the park.

  • Marina Celeste - Under My Skin (Remix)
Watch the video for 'Under My Skin' by Marina Celeste taken from her third album, 'The Angel Pop'. The album sees her collaborating with Terry Hall (The Specials, Fun Boy Three) after the two met when Marina covered 'Our Lips Are Sealed' with her previous releases with Nouvelle Vague.

  • Flashback Friday:Lunacy
Back in 2008 I did a small post on Fun Boy Three by some not-half-bad electro goth band (I usually loathe that goth crap), but fast forwarding to now there are 3 more covers of 80s cold war crisis track The Lunatics (Have Taken Over the Asylum). The Fun Boy Three were esoteric, sure, but in their [...]

  • OH AND JOHNNY MARR PLAYED HARMONICA
The decade that was the 80s is one that divides opinion on whether it was a good era for music. On the one hand, there were some really appalling things inflicted upon us..... Jive Bunny, Shakin Stevens, Joe Dolce , The Birdie Song, Cliff Richard being #1 every Xmas, Bucks Fizz, T'Pau , Bowie & Jagger destroying Dancing In The Streets, Agafuckingdoo , Phil Collins, Joel">Billy Joel and soap stars becoming pop stars (Kylie Minogue excepted!!) But on the other.....well, there's been loads of great and often long-forgotten bands featured here on TVV which hopefully more than make up for ...

  • The 2 Bears Remix EP
The 2 Bears are set to release a new remix EP featuring contributions from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and more. 2010 was a big year for Joe Goddard. In addition to work on his acclaimed solo album the producer had the small matter of a Hot Chip release to attend to, alongside his superb Greco-Roman imprint. As if that wasn't enough, Joe Goddard then formed one half of The 2 Bears . Formed with Raf Rundell, the pair have released two perfectly formed EPs thus far, blending fun and frisky house with a pop touch. Recently releasing their 'Curious Nature ...

  • Today’s KROQ Flashback: Fun Boy Three “The L ..
Funny how some songs become more relevant as time goes on.  I’d say the lyrics from this early 80′s splinter band (feat., members of The Specials) are very timely here in 2010.  Terrible video though!  Can’t have it all, I ‘spose.

  • The only chart that counted: 1981
Returning for three Sundays up to the big weekend with our obsession with Christmas top forties of yore. Now, what haven't we covered? In this case, an entirely ordinary number one in the greater scheme of Yule things... 40 Holly And The Ivys - Christmas On 45 Yeah, the whole disco medley thing was still big. Assorted rumours online that laughing boy David Gilmour played on it, and that future Dream Academy principal and Gilmour's mate Nick Laird-Clowes was involved. And to think this held off all sorts of stuff just outside the top 40, not least our old ...

  • I'll hum this tune forever
Glancing at what was around them at the time Dexys Midnight Runners (see posts passim) were going their own unique way proved to be more fulfilling than expected. In the chart announced on 1st August 1982, for instance, the theme to Postman Pat was at number 60. And that's barely the half of it. 40 Sylvian Sakamoto - Bamboo Houses/Bamboo Music Everyone knows of how David Sylvian turned on a dime from cheekboned New Romantic pin-up to experimental kingpin, but this was his first single after stepping off the Smash Hits gravy train and it still sounds like a ...

  • Weird At My School: The Like
Bands change. I accept that. In the ’80s, Bananarama went from being the haystack-haired girls who chummed around with Fun Boy Three and members of the Sex Pistols and the Jam to a bunch of tarted-up disco dollies—but I stayed along for the ride (well, until Siobhan Fahey left…). The Bangles started out as one Read more...

  • The 2 Bears Return
Dance duo The 2 Bears have confirmed details of their new EP and an upcoming British tour. Joe Goddard has dominated British dance music almost single handed this year. Hot Chip returned with a sensational new album, and are preparing to be joint headliners on the final LCD Soundsystem tour. Meanwhile, Joe Goddard has been running his own record label Greco-Roman which has released a slew of fantastic tracks. Never one to slacken off, the producer even released his debut solo album 'Harvest Festival'. Astonishingly, Joe Goddard aims to end 2010 by launching his latest endeavour. The 2 Bears is ...

  • Magda
Magda was a surprise standout at DEMF earlier this summer.  Her take on minimal was tight, groove-oriented and surprisingly funky.  (It's too bad she played on the Made in Detroit stage, which sounded pretty much like a garage.)  Her funkiness is partly explained in this mix, with a tracklisting that looks more like it came from a DFA-affiliated DJ rather than anyone from Minus.  Seriously! Go grab Magda's mix for RA if you haven't already. Goblin - Mad Puppet - Cinevox Lindstrom - Gang Sound - Bear Entertainment Munk - You Never See Me Back Down - Gomma Jimmy Edgar - Hot Raw Sex ...

  • TVD's The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel
Idelic’s Desperately Seeking | This week’s Idelic Hour was inspired by one of the many 80’s flashbacks I’ve had of late. I first met Madonna at a small gathering of friends at her and then husband Sean Penn’s estate deep in Malibu Canyon. My girlfriend at the time was working for Sean, who upon hearing I was the co-owner of the notorious after-hour club Power Tools, referred to me as “one of those people,” a disapproving reference to Madonna’s then fanatical entourage of club kids. Looking at back at that era the first thing that ...
