  • Frightened Rabbit Highland Shows
Frightened Rabbit have outlined plans for a tour of the Highlands, mixing solo shows with full band dates. The Highlands appear to have become quite the hot destination for any new group with a folk bent. Mumford & Sons started the trend, while Laura Marling has also become enamoured with Scotland’s Northern lands. Now Frightened Rabbit have confirmed plans for a full tour of the Highlands. However the band have a greater claim to the venture than most. The five piece are actually Scottish for a start, while Frightened Rabbit are also known for disappearing off into the North to ...

  • Oh The Profanity.
After the profanity-filled rant of my last post (I do apologise to those of a gentler disposition than myself), I’m afraid it’s necessary for me to profane againm with my second-ever post on the wonderful Startled Bunny, from Scotland. Sorry, Frightened Rabbit. I posted about Frightened Rabbit three years ago (three years? Jebus…), and on [...]

  • Changes
Five years ago today, Australia Day, I met my beautiful wife. To cut a long story short we had met through my blog. She commented on Modest Mouse and Mountain Goats gigs that we had both been to. Soon we were Last Fming and emailing. Then I had tickets to a great gig. Joanna Newsom, Andrew Bird and Bill Callahan on January 26, 2007. We met. We connected. We became gig buddies. We became friends. We became boy and girl friends. We bought a house together. We got married. So it's now been 5 and a half years or ...

Give me the soft, soft static, with a human voice underneath It might seem sacrilegious for a Frightened Rabbit fan like myself to declare a cover of one of their songs better than the original but that’s what I’m going to do here. • There Will Be Fireworks - Because Because ..
There Will Be Fireworks' eponymous debut album sounded like being caught in the middle of a violent tornado of sound, each song building steadily to a thunderous, overwhelming crescendo with lead vocalist, Nicholas McManus, screaming his lungs out to be heard. Because Because is an altogether more melancholy affair; the still, clear morning surveying the damage done by the great storm. It demonstrates a contemplative, introspective side and a growing confidence to play with different styles and rhythms while, crucially, remaining definably 'them'. First track, 'Harmonium Song', is sung gently to a keenly missed friend lost on a Winter's ...

  • A Letter From... Scotland #6
It’s the year that the Mayans earmarked for the apocalypse. Whichever your take on this prophecy, this year has already brought us ‘bracing’ hurricane winds and the release of a film about Margaret Thatcher. If it’s the end of the world as we know it, then it’s probably best that we dedicate this one to a fantastic soundtrack. Here at Clash, we’ve written up our pick of the best new Scottish acts for you. Hold tight. The La Fontaines Hang onto your hats, it’s a rap collective from Motherwell. • Readers' Poll Results
Is it too late to say happy new year? Happy thingamijig anyway. Before I can move on to exciting (note: may not actually be exciting) 2012 things I'd better get the poll results out of the way, so here they are. Best Album: 1. King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - Diamond Mine 2. Conquering Animal Sound - Kammerspiel 3. Adam Stafford - Build a Harbour Immediately =3. Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat - Everything's Getting Older 5. United Fruit - Fault Lines =5. Pensioner - Yearlings I'm sure that'll make up for King Creosote and Jon Hopkins missing out on the Mercury Prize ...
