Film School

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

FILM SCHOOL began life as a group of like-minded San Francisco musicians writing and producing music by themselves for themselves. The result was something very special indeed. Undoubtedly they rock - hungry unrestrained guitars and loud driven drumbeats - but it is a sound as broodi... Read More

  • Frengers en français
Frengers first crossed my ears in January of 2005. Entering the final stages of a degree in Film Production, I considered myself an “artist”—a dreamer of dreams, a hoper of hopes, and journalier of all matter of poetic crap (wherein the previous two phrases actually made an appearance). Having recently suffered the combined reality check of film school classes run amuck and mind-numbing internships, it became imperative to study abroad.

  • Video: Air – Sonic Armada
Film school alumni should get a big kick out Air’s new project. The French electronic duo will release a full album based on their recent endeavor scoring the famed silent film, A Trip To the Moon (Le Voyage Dans La Lune) . Despite being perhaps the first sci-fi film ever made, created in 1902, A Trip to the Moon incorporated some pretty amazing special effects (as seen here). Prior to this project, Smashing Pumpkins laid claim to the best known musical association to the film with their video for Tonight, Tonight, but by the looks and sound of it, Air ...

  • Under Your Spell: 'The Hurt Locker' Backers ..
"Drive" might not have made too many waves at the box office, or swept the awards circuit (although it's doing rather better than expected), but it has been a critical favorite, and shows all the signs of being a cult classic, and the kind of movie that will be endlessly copied over the next few years. Indeed, we shudder to think of the number of film school students currently working on shorts with big gaudy retro fonts and French electro scores. And already, we're seeing the first sign of similar projects doing the rounds, with The Hollywood Reporter ...

From the students at The Film School of Scottsdale Community College who brought us Portgual. The Man ’s first ever video for AKA M80 The Wolf back in 2006, we present their video for P.TM ’s “So American”. Much more abstract than the original , their video includes disintegrating cops, burly beards, hipster color schemes, pools of milk and lead singer John Gourley in full make-up, which creepily mirrors Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka in the 2005 remake. Also, Gourley is rocking a clean shave - he must be too busy to realize we finally hit Moustache Movember…someone shoot him ...

Alan Wilkis has been known around the blogosphere for awhile now as a talented remixer. His work with material from bands like Phantogram, Phoenix, Yeasayer and Film School earned him some acclaim for his ability to keep a song’s important elements intact while employing some pretty impressive tweaks. Wilkis begins unveiling another special project with [...]

  • It's a right turn to the left, stranger
    - As I turned a familiar corner, to the left, a blinding late-September sun made my eyes go funny - bouncing off, as it did, those broken, unemployed leaves - as this song built to a closing fury and rage in my worn-out ears and I got a vivid flashback to the time I was  almost introduced to Emma Anderson from Lush . But that moment, those sounds , were a long time ago now and, the thing is, there is no going back. But today, in Glasgow, we had sun and warmth and a few remembered smiles... that's all worth scribbling about (especially ...

  • RapeGaze pioneers SALEM make the most boring ..
Don't get me wrong, I love me some rapegaze. I like hanging out in graveyards and cutting "†" symbols into my skin just like any other rapegazer as I listen to some gazeyrape sounds of Salem . But this video is really boring. There are like trucks driving around or something. Maybe it is a metaphor? Unfortunately, I didn't go to film school, so I can't really 'analyze and interpret' visual images, but as a casual observer, I ZZZZZZZZZed the whole way thru this one. Maybe I should get more in2 'trucks driving around' aimlessly. I can go vibe ...

  • Learn Something: Best Coast, Chromeo & Kreay ..
The Fader : While the standard aspiration in the American school system is to get a college degree, we’ve found that many of the weirdest, best artists have stayed true to outsider form, either eschewing the system altogether and dropping out, or going the opposite extreme, getting ten-plus years deep into the academy. We talked to six musicians—Killer Mike, Kreayshawn, Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast, John Maus, Ekhi Lopetegi of Delorean and David Macklovitch of Chromeo—about getting schooled. Who: Kreayshawn School: Berkeley Film School Years of study: One What was school like? I was like a year into ...
