Wonder Villains - New WavesIn the mid 90’s a scene born out of fanzine culture, glitter, glamour and d-i-y attitude called Teen-C punked its way across the UK for a few brief but exciting years. The likes of Bis, Dweeb, Disco Pistols, The Period Pains and most notably Kenickie, featuring a young Lauren Laverne, created a wave of short lived enthusiasm for a whole bunch of teenagers with no musical ability but plenty of style / attitude to create their own bands. Surfacing: Mercy [New Artist]Words: Saam Das On Saturday, I ventured along to XFM's annual All Dayer at the Camden Barfly to see numerous bands. One of them was Hatcham Social . Their set was a miserable experience, albeit made somewhat interesting by the appearance of a guest vocalist in a (dubious) onesie for the final song. That was Mercy . Otherwise known as former major label popstar, Amy Studt . Turns out she's doing exciting new things. The Devil's 2011 Retrospective - JulyFamine in Somalia, shootings in Norway and the death of Amy Winehouse made for a miserable July. There was however, one bright spot, the New Of The World ceased publication enabling vicars and call girls to rest a little easier in their bed. The best tracks I heard in July included Poached Eggs by Fight Like Apes, an incredible cover of Nirvana's Love Buzz from King Q4, the sensual beauty of Skinny Girl Diet's Sunburn and the melancholic bipolar pop of Karaocake. Surfacing: Emperor YesWords: Saam Das Not much has been said about Emperor Yes yet, the new project from Adam Betts of Three Trapped Tigers , Ash Gardner who has recorded the likes of Noah & The Whale and Mumford & Sons , and Hugo Sheppard (formerly of metal outfit To-mera ). The mish mash of influences has given birth to a synth-heavy, experimental pop sound that sounds a bit like the second coming of The Postal Service . Live Review: New Found Glory - Solus, Cardif ..Support for New Found Glory comes firstly in the form of Newport’s Save Your Breath playing for a more or less hometown crowd. Unfortunately their early spot on the bill meant that gig-goers were still streaming in whilst the band were already playing. Older songs like Stay Young got a much warmer reaction than their newer and lesser known material from new album Vices . Save Your Breath are forerunners in the UK pop-punk scene and should have have a much better response than they did. Next up are Ireland’s new wave indie band, Fight Like Apes.
