  • Fennesz // Hikari
Austrian electronic soundscaper Fennesz has been pretty busy lately: collaborating on a couple of albums here, remixing a few tracks there, and scoring a movie in between. The dreamy-track below is taken from that film score (AUN: The Beginning and End of All Things), showing that Fennesz hasn’t sacrificed quality for quantity with his recent [...]

  • ♫ Listen: Fennesz - "Hikari"
Christian Fennesz — whose last name rhymes with “Venice,” FYI — is set to release a soundtrack for a film that deals with a suicidal Japanese scientist, an orphan whose mom died during childbirth, and a deaf Brazilian mathematician. HAHAH!! Anyway, the film, as our intrepid news editor Squeo reported last month, is called AUN: The Beginning and the End of All Things , and it’s directed by Edgar Honetschläger. Fennesz’s 15-song soundtrack was originally slated for a late-April release, then moved to a late-May release, and now has a release date of June 25 via Ash International. Check out “Hikari ...

  • Fest Bests: Field Day 2012.
Although Sacramento's finest punk rap outfit may no longer be penned garishly into this year's Field Day  billing (all Death Grips dates are off as they conclude their second Epic LP of 2012 ), it regardless remains one of the forthcoming estival season's finest. Having proffered our subjective highlights on this month's I'll Be Your Mirror , here be our Fest Bests for Field Day, June 2nd... Blanck Mass Who: Benjamin John Power, the one of two Fuck Buttons seamsters now threading the glitchy, swelling glories of  Tarot Sport  into this swell solo project by the moniker ...

  • Music Review: Orcas - Orcas
Orcas Orcas [Morr Music; 2012] by Rowan Savage Rating: Just in case you missed Obscure Mythology 101 in school — hell, I even did a year of classical Greek and we never got any further than sniggering about pederasty — Orcus was lord of the underworld and punisher of broken promises. Death and betrayal, in turn, are classic pop themes, but the reason I mention the god who would later transmute into Dis Pater (Pluto, now sadly demoted from planetary status) and then the more familiar Hades is because the genus Orcinus , to which the orca or killer whale belongs, is named ...

  • Laurel Halo: "Light + Space"
On the first cut from her Hyperdub debut, Laurel Halo makes you guess again, just when you thought you'd figured her out. In the wake of two EPs that traded her 2010  King Felix  EP's avant-pop poetry for instrumental electronic hybrids, Halo again brings her singing to the fore, but it comes with a bold disclosure and near-theatrical delivery: "Words are just words, words are just words, that you soon forget." Halo's glistening and painfully nuanced keys and electronics create a minimal, emotive blanket, over which her unusually clear vocals exert a hyper-feminine power, the volume raised ...

  • Yu Miyashita – An Arc (vvhy)
Yu Miyashita has some involvement with the revived Mille Plateaux and viewing his music as an extension of the abstract glitch pioneered by the Frankfurt label makes sense. Direct lineage can be traced from Miyashita’s work on An Arc back to some of Mille Plateaux’s prime movers: Fennesz, Tim Hecker, Sebastian Meissner and Wolfgang Voigt, [...] Yu Miyashita – An Arc (vvhy) is a post from: Cyclic Defrost Magazine .
