  • Feature: In-Frequencies #8: Taco Leg, Martyr ..
A hardcore-heavy round-up of some new-ish cassette, CD-R and vinyl releases including Loose Grip, Taco Leg, Martyr Privates and Negative Reinforcement. Words by TIM SCOTT . Loose Grip Cereal (7”, Bedroom Suck) By far the best 7” I've heard so far this year. The debut for this Brisbane weirdo/super group hits all the right buttons. It's five tracks of fun speedy US hardcore punk without the goon factor – well, maybe a little bit. There's also a good sense humour – one song is called 'Baked' the other 'Cereal'. Kieran's vocals are manic but controlled, but more on ...

  • Roomrunner: "Super Vague"
Denny Bowen, drummer for sadly defunct Baltimore hardcore firebrands Double Dagger , has a new project now, Roomrunner . The band released a self-titled cassette on Fan Death last year; on May 15, the label will put out a new EP from the noisy outfit, Super Vague , which includes this crunchy title track. • Roomrunner - Roomrunner
When Double Dagger broke up I didn’t really give much thought to the sort of groups that would form in the wake of it. I figured members would splinter off and start similar bands, in the way that typically seems to happen. It never once crossed my mind that something like Roomrunner would be the next step, but apparently for Denny Bowen it was the way to go. A band that has no problem with reaching back into the bountiful heyday of 90’s grungy/alterna-rock airwaves. I just picture these guys fitting snugly within the track listing of ...

  • News: Woollen Kits Talk US Tour, New Album ..
Tom H, Tom R and Leon are Woollen Kits, three no-nonsense Melbourne dudes who write some damn catchy punk rock. After a couple EPs they recently released their debut LP on Sydney’s R.I.P Society, and are currently touring the US. Before they left, they spoke to TIM SCOTT about shedding their early Beat Happening-inspired sound, shooting budget DIY clips and their plans for a follow-up. Photo by DIMITY KASZ . So you've just released your debut album. How long was it in the making? Tom H: Ages! [ Laughs ] I realised 'Be Your Friend' which is on the ...

  • Woollen Kits
Woollen Kits are a three piece band from Melbourne, Australia. The trio has sprung out of the garage with their self-titled debut album, released via Sydney, Australia's  R.I.P Society record label. Its nine primitive, gritty guitar tunes straddle surf pop, proto-punk and garage rock. The album was mastered by Mikey Young, guitarist for Aussie favorites Eddy Current Suppression Ring and member of the garage four-piece  Ooga Boogas , whose debut album never leaves my side. Woollen Kits are currently on a tour of the US - see the dates here . They also have some free downloads on bandcamp . • Debut: Roomrunner, "Aesthetic"
Here's the second single off of Roomrunner's self-titled Fan Death Records cassette that came out in November. (We previewed the first, "Spinning", back in September.) For those of us that are still emotional about the departure of the beloved Double Dagger, drummer Denny Bowen's new project will give some solace. "Aesthetic" is a heavy-hitting track with a full-court press of fuzz and guitar and throbbing drums that are definitely at home in a new band with a rou...

  • Roomrunner - "Spinning"
2011 brought the sad news that Baltimore hardcore firebrands Double Dagger are no more. Rising from the ashes of that band is Roomrunner , a new project from DD drummer Denny Bowen. "Spinning" is taken from Side A of Roomrunner's just-released self-titled cassette on Fan Death ; the project will release a 7" on the label in Spring 2012, too. MP3:   Roomrunner: "Spinning"

  • Music Review: Locrian - The Clearing
Locrian The Clearing [Fan Death; 2011] by Nathan Shaffer Rating: Anne Carson once said, disavowing herself, “Homer’s a poet. […] I would say I make things.” “ Poietic ,” and not merely poetic, one might say, were one inclined to fabricate. And so Carson’s ‘things’ are word-works, built and expansive. They move, almost effortlessly, between Isaiah, Simonides, Keats, and Artaud, between the revelation and the sonnet and the libretto; a species-worth of literature weaves in and out of itself by the hand of a writer working the exposed relics of our written languages, the vast accumulation of our words. And it ...
