  • News: Does Music Have A Place At The Footy? ..
Ever since that fateful day in 1991 when Angry Anderson drove out onto Waverley Park in a blue Batmobile, the question of whether music has a place on the AFL football field has been posed again and again. (Meatloaf stinking up the “G” at last year’s Grand Final for a rumoured $500,000 certainly didn’t help.) The latest to weigh in on the debate is senior sports journalist Greg Baum, who put forward his case for on-field silence in a column published last week in The Age . Baum, who considers himself the voice of a so-called “silent majority ...

  • News: Gotye Vs Kimbra Vs Beards In APRA Show ..
The first Australian single to go #1 in the US in 10 years will go head to head with a joke song about having sex with a bearded man. And that’s not the strangest thing to come out of the APRA Music Award nominations, which were announced today (May 2). Such is the dire state of local dance music (apparently) that a song by French DJ David Guetta featuring Adelaide-born, US-based singer Sia is somehow vying for Australian Dance Work of the Year. There was also a Rock Work of the Year nomination for Good Charlotte’s Benji and ...

  • News: Dylan Tribute Shows Announced
The “Bob Dylan tribute” buried in last week’s Splendour In The Grass announcement certainly provoked a strong reaction from the M+N community. “OH MY GOD,” exclaimed forum user mrmagoo, while another claimed it made them “puke” (with excitement, we presume). Now, we can finally reveal that it’ll be more than just a one-off show. In the vein of The Beatles’ White Album concert and the aborted Nirvana tribute shows , the Bob Dylan 50th anniversary concert will be making its way to a theatre near you (if you live in Brisbane, Melbourne, or Sydney that is). In celebration ...

  • News: Hillsong, Joke Band In Line For APRA ‘ ..
Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ will win APRA’s “Song of the Year”, but let’s not forget the 29 other also-rans vying for the title. They include Hillsong Live, the “global expression of praise and worship from Hillsong Church”; inexplicably popular, one-dimensional joke band The Beards (pictured); ex- Idol contestants Guy Sebastian and Matt Corby; and Australian Music Prize winners The Jezabels. No HTRK, Royal Headache, or Kitchen's Floor? The songs are voted on by APRA members, making this a 100 percent peer-voted music award and putting more weight behind the argument that musicians should ...

  • Feature: Golden Plains 2012 Day 1: Being The ..
When it comes to Meredith’s sister festival Golden Plains, it’s as much about “being there” as it is about the music, writes LAWSON FLETCHER after witnessing an excellent, but predictable first day. Photos by MICHAEL BAINBRIDGE . Day two coverage soon. The odd thing about festivals at Meredith’s Supernatural Amphitheatre is that the music is both the most and least important thing all weekend. It’s hard to judge whether this used to be different, but it does seem more pronounced the last few years. When the question we used to hear was, “Who are you looking forward ...

  • News: Listen: Cat Empire Member's Ye Olde AF ..
OK, so it’s no It’s A Draw by Sidewiner’s Nick Craft, but at least the theme song for AFL expansion team Greater Western Sydney (GSW) doesn’t sound like ‘Freo Heave Ho’, the diabolically contemporary theme song for the Dockers. Harking back to the “genre’s” oompah/barber-shop traditions, ‘The Mighty Giants’ was written and produced by Melbourne songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Harry Angus (Cat Empire, Jackson Jackson), who says he wanted to create a new song that sounded old. “I started to become interested in this idea that there exists an entirely different genre of music that ...

  • News: Triple J Reveals ‘Second’ Hottest 100 ..
In the lead-up to triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown on Australia Day, eventual list topper Gotye revealed how he’d like to see Godley & Creme-inspired album track ‘State of The Art’ make the cut. It didn’t, of course, but we can now reveal how close it actually came thanks to a list of the Hottest 100 also-rans (picks 101-200) published by triple j today. Included among the selections of the “second” Hottest 100 are hotly tipped tracks by Oh Mercy (‘Stay Please Stay’), The Middle East (‘Land Of The Bloody Unknown’), Cut Copy (‘Need You Now’), Loon Lake ...

  • Jezabels big say Joe
The Jezabels are likely to make “serious waves” on the international scene, at least according to Eskimo Joe. Guitarist Stuart MacLeod took to his blog after watching The Jezabels at the Caloundra Music Festival recently, saying he believes the Sydney-based band have a shot at cracking the overseas market. “It was the first time we’ve had the pleasure of seeing The Jezabels play live, and they didn’t disappoint,” he said. "Great songs, great vocalist and a band that I think has a real shot at making some serious waves overseas". Source Link:  Eleven Magazine Attached Image(s):  Splendour ...

  • News: Eskimo Joe Pen New Dockers Song
It says a lot about Eskimo Joe’s recent history that the best thing they’ve done in years is a proposed theme song for an AFL team. ‘Freo Freo’ is one of four songs members of the Fremantle Dockers will be voting on as part of an overhaul of the club’s image. It’s up against the current, much- maligned club song ‘Freo Heave Ho’ by Kenny Walther; a reworked version of that song, also by Walther; and the military-esque ‘The Mighty Roar of Freo’ by Rosco Elliott. “‘Freo Freo’ was written with Fremantle as a town in ...
