  • Album | Emma Gatrill – Chapter 1
Musicians, like film stars and television broadcasters, are some of the most important cultural icons in history. Furthermore, instruments can carry as much, if not more, powerful symbolism than musicians themselves. Take the electric guitar, for example, and Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton spring to mind. Or the piano: Elton John and Stevie Wonder. Or even the wobble board and, you guessed it, Rolf Harris pops up. In folk music, one of the prime instruments is of course the acoustic guitar (Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Laura Marling are all a dab hand at it) but what about ...

  • Five Live: Remembering Donald “Duck” Dunn ..
2012 has already been a harsh year in terms of the number of influential musicians we’ve lost, the latest of which was bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn who passed away in Tokyo this weekend at the age of 70. Dunn was an innovative four-stringer whose work as a member of the Stax Records house band and as part of Booker T. and the MGs has stood the test of time and won him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as a lifetime achievement Grammy award. [Photo by TheStaxMan ] While Duck’s more well known for ...

  • R.I.P. Donald 'Duck' Dunn, Influential Bassi ..
USA Today : Dunn was in Tokyo for a series of shows. News of his death was posted on the Facebook site of his friend and fellow musician Steve Cropper, who was on the same tour. Cropper said Dunn died in his sleep. Miho Harasawa, a spokeswoman for Tokyo Blue Note, the last venue Dunn played, confirmed he died alone early Sunday. She had no further details. Vulture : Dunn’s musical influence is hard to understate, having worked with the Blues Brothers, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and a host of others over the years. In 1992, he was inducted ...

The Associated Press reports that Donald "Duck" Dunn  (pictured above far right), the legendary bassist for Booker T. & the MGs , the Blues Brothers band, and several others, has died. He passed in his sleep in Tokyo, where he was touring with longtime collaborator and friend Steve Cropper. He was 70. Dunn was a mainstay of Memphis's soul scene. In 1961 at the age of 20, he became a member of the Mar-Keys, an early all-instrumental Stax band. In 1965, he joined Cropper, Al Jackson, and Booker T. Jones to become the bassist for Booker T. & the MGs, Stax's ...

  • The Plant Kingdom: Green Onions
Booker T. & the M.G.’s : Green Onions (Live) [ purchase ] I woke up early this morning to two pieces of news—first, that our theme for the week was “The Plant Kingdom,” and second, that Donald “Duck” Dunn, the bass player who was a member of Booker T. & the M.G.’s, had died. I naturally thought of posting “Green Onions.” Then, I found out that Dunn joined the band after the song was released. On the other hand, having been a member since 1964, I have to assume that he played the song maybe a million times, so I ...

  • Robert Johnson Music Matters
Robert Johnson remains an allusive, mythic figure. Recording less than thirty tracks, his hot wired take on Delta blues would fuel the rock revolution. Eric Clapton devoted an entire album to his output, with Led Zeppelin merrily pilfering from his collection of double entendres. This week would have contained Robert Johnson's 101st birthday. As a tribute to a true pioneer, the Music Matters campaign pieced together a special animation to detail the guitarist's life and work.

The only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a solo artist, and as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream), Eric Clapton stands in 2012 as one of the most influential guitarists of his or any other generation. • Hot Docs Mini Review: Beware of Mr. Baker ..
Considered one of the greatest jazz drummers to every live, Ginger Baker is better known for his work with rock n’ roll supergroups Cream and Bad Faith. Hailed as a musical genius by his peers, Baker’s life is as unforgettable as the music he helped to create. Baker is one of those individuals who you would love to jam with musically, but would hate to be around on a social level. The fact that the film begins with Baker violently trusting his cane into the face of the film’s director, Jay Bulger, lets you know that Beware of ...
