  • Liars: "No.1 Against The Rush" - Liars im Vi ..

If synthpop royalty is a thing that exists, Vince Clarke is it, straight up. Clarke is a founding member of Depeche Mode (before they turned gothy), Yaz, and Erasure, and if you’re making a move toward keyboards on your new album, he’s probably the guy you want remixing it. Liars, who already had the Mute [...]

  • Firsts: Vince Clarke and Martin Gore...
The Daily Swarm : The vast expanse of musical history that exists between Vince Clarke and Martin Gore is nothing short of staggering. Beyond just the tens of millions of albums sold and countless accolades between Depeche Mode (which Clarke and Gore co-founded together in 1980), Yazoo (AKA Yaz, which Clarke started with powerhouse vocalist Alison Moyet) and Erasure (Clarke’s long-running duo with singer Andy Bell), the shared and individual discographies of both men make clear that each makes music that above all connects… Read and comment. • Carter Tutti Void: Collaboration You Should ..
A little over a year ago Mute recording artists (legendary and recent) all gathered at the Roundhouse in London for a weekendlong festival/celebration of the labels exceptional output. Audiences were treated to performances from classic heavyweights like Erasure, Nitzer Ebb, The Residents and future heavweights Liars…but one performance in particular was so unique and remarkable it resulted in a record. A collaboration between Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti (of Throbbing Gristle and Chris & Cosey respectively) and Nik Void (of Factory Floor,) turned out an EP titled Transverse. One would half ...

Depeche Mode is one of the most oft-mentioned influences on many of our modern rock artists. Both Gotye and Jonathan Davis from Korn mentioned Depeche Mode as influences. • The Playlist Profile: Nicholas Stoller
One night, nearly two decades ago, Nicholas Stoller, at that time a freshman at Harvard, dragged his mattress out of his room and into the room of his suitemate. Both young men had long-distance high school girlfriends whom they missed terribly, and they'd decided to have a sleepover to bond over their shared state of longing. During the sleepover, the suitemate decided to put on his prom song, “Always” by the English synthpop duo Erasure. The two listened as a ghostly plucking of strings filled the room, accompanied by a faint, mournful moaning, then a pulsing beat and quirky ...

There’s no thinning at the front or diminishing presence in the surface of Pascal Savy ’s Receding , despite the title, and for all the fancy philo-: Savy speaks of  'some psychological and existential questions which I try to convey below the surface of music,' which is all fine and chin-strokingly brow-furrowingly dandy, but is there not perhaps a hint of more to hum in the bathtub than previously? • SATURDAY'S SCOTTISH SINGLE (Part 26)
Two of the trio were from Glasgow....that makes them a Scottish act as far as I'm concerned. From wiki:- Bronski Beat formed in 1983 when Somerville, Steinbachek and Bronski shared a three-bedroom flat in Lancaster House in Brixton, southwest London. Bronski Beat signed a recording contract with London Records in 1984 after doing only nine live gigs. The band's debut single, "Smalltown Boy", the tale of a boy who was cast away by his family for being homosexual, was a hit, peaking at #3 in the UK Singles Chart. The single was accompanied by a promotional video ...

  • Always Record Store Day, Xiu Xiu / Dirty Bea ..
Another one for those April 21st wishlists , this: Polyvinyl Records are to release a split 7" for this year's Record Store Day conjoining the distorted talents of Jamie Stewart and Alex Zhang Hungtai. Always saw Xiu Xiu  delve into a superbly profound disconcertion and Stewart here covers Erasure's glam-camp number of the same name to equally subversive effect. His vocals reek of a genuine desperation, the acerbic rhythmic clatter that clutters its backdrop gloriously accenting said lunacy to conjure an end product that's just as upsetting as Andy Bell's stage presence . Zhang Hungtai meanwhile opts to ...
