  • Urban Sharing Experiment at Antwerp City 201 ..
Life can become a colorless routine.. So we decided ‘t was time for an experiment, of sorts… We placed envelopes and other packages with strange or mysterious writing on different places in the city. Hidden in those envelopes were one of our cds and a note, thanking the “lucky finders” for the “risk” of opening [...]

  • Don Preston, synth whiz and Mother of Invent ..
Our dear friends at The Wire report that keyboardist/FOF (Friend of Frank) Don Preston is set to be honored with a collection of electronic compositions. Preston, an original member of Zappa’s psychedelic, traveling road show that was the Mothers of Invention was a confidant of Zappa’s and a core member of The Mothers until his departure in 1974. Preston played on nearly every “essential” Zappa LP and was best known for his ridiculously sublime Moog solo on 1972’s “Waka/Jawaka” off the LP of the same name, which even knocked Bob Moog himself flat on his ...

  • Mermonte - Mermonte
From the start of the self-titled debut album you may be struck by images of a little Parisian café whilst two actors pretend to fall in love over their coffee’s and pain au chocolates on the silver screen. Well, my housemate and I were anyway. But Mermonte are not stereotypical Parisians, (they hail from Rennes for a start) but their music could easily make people fall in love. Joy just seems to be woven into the core of their notes and like their mother tongue, love pours out of this record. Maybe I’m being too mushy and emotional ...

  • Live: Just The Tip. Kishi Bashi, The Waiting ..
The Waiting Room is, generally speaking, an unenviable place to linger: shuddering gusts pass through its poorly hinged doors incessantly and irksomely; the floor is scarcely discernible beyond a crusty gloss of crud; malingerers squirm atop sticky benches to the left, to the left and to the right. Field Day's newly acquired Stoke Newington haunt of the same name is, however, a rather more inviting environ, its walls embellished with faded tiles and incongruous planks of floorboard. Factor in the fiddler in the basement, of Montreal's unsung superlative Kishi Bashi , and you've suddenly got something the hordes ...

  • HELLYEAH "War in Me" Song Review 4.5 out of ..
"War in Me," the first taste of HELLYEAH's forthcoming Band of Brothers [out July 17], sounds like an atom bomb being dropped on modern hard rock. Make no mistake about it, the track's mushroom cloud envelopes all the competition and solidifies the band's place at the top of the 21st century

  • Silver, Gold & Bronze; Gruff Wins Once Again ..
Gold Medal Winner, one half of a split 7" with compatriot Cate Le Bon, sees prophetic surrealist Gruff Rhys  team up with Rodrigo Amarante and swivel his every attention to two hugely significant, already-omnipresent events of the British calendar. Released April 21st, it is of course quite inherently involved with this year's Record Store Day but also its first lyric envelopes the equally innate resentment within the nation toward those dastardly Olympics ("I was a gold medal winner at the Olympics for loneliness"). Perhaps it's purely an extended metaphor for Rhys' impressively endless wistfulness as he continues to ...

  • Album Review: Every Time I Die - Ex Lives ..
Having never left more than two years between each album, you could have been mistaken in thinking that Every Time I Die had slipped off the map when the two years since "New Junk Aesthetic" brought about no new material. Yet what quickly became apparent with the release of their new album "Ex Lives" , is that this Buffalo Hardcore outfit - far from slipping off the map - have come back to crush it. ETID have always come across as an angry outfit, but with "Ex Lives" these guys are seriously pissed off, this is the fastest and angriest you’ll hear ...

  • Nedry - In a Dim Light
The most obvious thing to note about Nedry is the vocal delivery. The trio is comprised of the guitars, laptops, synths and drum machines of Matt Parker and Chris Amblin, with Ayu Okakita's vocal cut adrift from their swirling and choppy arrangements. Aurally removed, it feels, Okakita flourishes with fluctuations and moans. The first track is called ‘I Would Rather Explode’ and you wonder if she isn’t doing so while restraining at the same time. A little way in to a slow opening for the album Okakita suddenly rises in pitch and let's something go – and that ...
