  • WHISTLE PEAK Half Asleep Upon Echo Falls
The emerald green waters upon which the couple float on the front of ‘Half Asleep Upon Echo Falls’ reminds me of a copper sulphate-saturated lake in North Wales I saw as a child: a welcoming, brightly coloured pool of mineral-enriched balminess. The Louisville electro-folk of Whistle Peak is a similarly buoyant and luxuriant experience: eleven tracks of melancholy-tinged Vaudevillian alt-pop floating on banjos, xylophone and egg-shaker with washes of electronic flutter and mechanical scrape that soothes and surprises. At the gentler end of the album’s spectrum ‘Sleepy Pants’ is an unhurried early morning stretch of the arms, a mellow ...

  • Abandoned Pools - In Silence + Marigolds
More new music that was just emailed to me that has been out for a little while now, but this is the first I'm hearing it and hopefully for you too. You may be familiar with lead singer and multi-instrumentalist of Abandoned Pools, Tommy Walter, as the former bassist and one of the founding members of the 90's alt-rock band Eels . So going into listening to these tracks I was not only excited to hear some new music from one of the founding members of one of my favorite bands of the 90's, I was also shocked ...

  • Abandoned Pools sign to Tooth & Nail Records ..
Abandoned Pools, the solo venture of songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Tommy Walter, have signed to Seattle-based Tooth & Nail Records. The label will release the L.A. native’s third album “Sublime Currency” later this year. Walter, an original member of the Eels, released two albums in first half of last decade on two different labels — 2001′s “Humanistic” helped Abandoned [...]

  • Built to Spill, J Mascis Record Electronic D ..
On Doug Martsch and Brett Nelson’s inaugural release as the Electronic Anthology Project , the Built to Spill duo took on music by their own band, re-recording popular BTS tunes in an ’80s electro-pop style. The result was both an oddly appealing experiment and entertaining way to deconstruct the guitar-driven work for which they’re better known. Now EAP is back with perhaps the best indie-rock guitarist ever in tow: J Mascis and Nelson have teamed up to electrify the Dinosaur Jr. catalog with Mascis providing lead vocals on a new set due out April 21 for Record Store Day ...

  • Introducing: Inspired And The Sleep
San Diego’s Inspired And The Sheep (bandcamp/twitter) distill music that lo-fi on a summer breeze – understandable when a number of their tunes were penned when songwriter Max Greenhalgh was working as a beach lifeguard. The sonic and growling experiments from the now three-piece sound a little as if Eels had a rather sunnier disposition, [...] Introducing: Inspired And The Sleep was originally published on The Blue Walrus

  • Eels - Last Stop This Town (Song + Video) ..
Here's an oldie but a goodie from the Eels that always gets at least a few listens every time it comes on my playlist. "Last Stop This Town" is a song that seems to have it all, wrapped up neatly in a tight little tune just for you. You got real smooth vocals, a catchy baseline, some synths that'll get your head nodding, a little dub before people even knew what dub was and of course everybody's favorite talking carrot before talking carrots were even popular. Classic jam and an even better video. Good shit... 06 Eels ...

What other musical family is so entwined in each other's output that both their grindcore and jazz projects can realistically be reviewed in the same space? For Resurrection and Life, trumpeter Dennis Gonzalez and his sons Aaron (contrabass) and Stefan (drums) once again collaborated with legenda...

  • X-mas Songs That Aren't X-mas Songs
A bunch of songs that have absolutely nothing to do with Christmas, but always give me a warm, fuzzy, Christmas-y feeling. This usually just means that there's a xylophone in there somewhere, or perhaps a bit of strings. That's all I need. For something more traditional, my immaculate X-mas mix of 2008 still works. Merry Christmas. (zip) X-mas Songs That Aren't X-mas Songs (52 mb) 1. Isobell Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Asleep on a sixpence 2. Sex Gang - Land of ghosts 3. Radiohead - No surprises 4. Sugar - Changes 5. Eels - Living life (Daniel Johnston cover) 6. Nick Cave ...

  • Jesca Hoop
If, like Jesca Hoop (pictured), you grew up singing trad tunes in four-part harmony, then left to become a homesteader, it’s inevitable that at some stage you picked up your guitar and took to the road. After tours with Eels, Polyphonic Spree, Elbow and Peter Gabriel, Hoop heads to Woodford before stopping at Joes Waterhole, Eumundi on Saturday Jan 7, 2012.

Check this mix Selected by Dylan Baldi of Cloud Nothings. It's part of the Hype build for the release of the next album “Attack on Memory” out January 24th on Carpark Records. Also check out the Cloud Nothings 'Cleveland Mixtape' from earlier this year to DL below. Dylan says: "While I was writing the songs that would become *Attack On Memory*, I listened almost exclusively to music that was made before I was born. This is a pretty common practice for me, actually, but I took it to a new level while making the record. I more or less ...

  • An Alt. Christmas 04: Eels
[Not everyone loves Christmas songs but I, for one, can't get enough of them.  Every year it seems we get the same old perennial hits, and I guess that's part of the charm - Christmas is a time for comforting familiarity after all - but most of these aren't as fulfilling as one might hope, musically speaking. [...]

  • Peggy Sue: Acrobats
Peggy Sue Acrobats Yep Roc Records [2011] Fire Note Says: Peggy Sue return quickly with a new album and a new sound that should capture some fans with its burning intensity! Album Review: Sometimes music is all about the risk and that is exactly what London's Peggy Sue have taken on their sophomore record Acrobats . The group just released their debut last year but Fossils And Other Phantoms [2010] was a much quieter folk affair compared to the new rock direction and sound that gives Acrobats its heartbeat. It is a move that could have blown up in the ...
