MP3: Fang IslandYou know what's a fun genre that we don't really hear anything about anymore? Math rock. Slint, the Dismemberment Plan, Battles (kind of). They were/are great groups heavily influenced by progressive rock with unique and unconventional time signatures. Talking With Clinton Doggett of More Humans ..More Humans appeared on the DC scene via Pittsburg as a breath of fresh air. The twangy indie pop sound heard on the trio's second EP Demon Station was also a departure for the formerly hardcore-only label Cricket Cemetery that released the five-song EP back in 2011. Hardcore or not, Demon Station grabs the listener by the ear and brings them along for a ride full of rich vocal harmonies, emotive lyrics, and melody arrangements, bringing to mind past DC darlings The Dismemberment Plan. MP3: CursivePost-hardcore act Cursive are gearing up for the release of their latest album, I Am Gemini, which is due out on 2/27. The track below, "Wowowow," is off the new CD. For fans of this heavier sound, it should certainly please the band's fanbase. Post-hardcore has been on the decline ever since The Dismemberment Plan broke up (but they did just get back together. Grooms - Prom(Kanine, 2011) Grooms' debut, Rejoicer , was my favorite album of 2009 . I have a fondness for and often slip back into the gritty guitars and general dissonance of 90's indie rock and Rejoicer struck so hard on that aesthetic, those hooks and the general feeling of rawness that I was immediately smitten. It's a difficult thing, becoming so brazenly attached to an album, and then not feel some sense of disappointment when the follow-up isn't quite as awesome.
