  • ONE TO WATCH: Lydia Baylis
Underground Sounds by Tim Osbourne Tim Osbourne is a Music writer in the UK. He covers emerging artists for rslblog.com Lydia Baylis has made an early career out of building powerful and anthemic folk-ridden tracks that can seamlessly resonate with most everyone. Lyrically, she is challenging and provocative, but the material this artist comes out with is still absolutely and completely accessible for fans of modern indie music. Indeed, one of the most impressive things about the artist is how closely she holds her musical influences to the heart. The “raw-ness” of Van Morrison is definitely present, alongside the ...

  • Throwback Album: Jeff Buckley - Grace
Okay, I'm new here, so I don't exactly know the stance on who did it better in 90s grunge. However, one thing I do know is that I've never actually heard somebody make the sun rise until I heard Jeff Buckley's first and only full-length release, 1994's  Grace . While bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam  were giving "proper society" the finger, Jeff Buckley  was busy bringing poetry to the masses. Too bad not many people actually ever heard of him. Getting his start as a modern day troubadour, Buckley  melded rock, blues, jazz, and something ...

Quentin Tarantino and Steve McQueen dared to tackle race and slavery with their latest projects, "Django Unchained" and "Twelve Years A Slave," and it looks like they've now paved the way for other filmmakers to follow suit. One such example is British helmer Amma Asante who's set to adapt the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle -- a half-black illegitimate daughter of renowned Admiral Sir John Lindsay, eventually taken in and raised as an aristocratic lady in 18th Century England by Lindsay's uncle William Murray, the Earl of Mansfield. Most impressive is the cast Asante has managed to ...

  • Live Review: Damn Terran + Chicks Who Love G ..
Walking into the venue to have my ears assaulted by a punk cover of Dido wasn’t the best introduction to Sydney based group Chicks Who Love Guns . The band of larrikins seemed to have some hardcore groupies in the crowd, and to their credit they had a fun presence, but their music was not to my taste; their songs all sounded the same, and their front man lacked the cocky bravado necessary to pull off the vibe they were aiming for. Moving right along to Damn Terran , who lured in a hefty crowd and deftly held their attention for ...

  • Who Are…Death Grips
If somehow, in the year 2012, you’re still looking for evidence of the changing face of the record industry, consider that the Sacramento noise/punk-rap trio Death Grips was recently signed to Epic Records by L.A. Reid, the man responsible for the careers of Justin Bieber, Dido, Ciara and P!nk. Yet not only is the impeccably [...]

  • Zemmy: Love From London
(Love From London is an ongoing series where correspondents Alex Kenning and Izzy Lawrence introduce us to bands generating excitement across the pond.) Zemmy is a singer/songwriter originally from Nigeria. She has been based in London for the best part of 15 years and has been honing her unique twist of pop with catchy melodies and great lyrics. If comparisons need to be made, there are bits of Sia, Sade & Dido in there, along with influences of church hymns and classical music from her school days. It’s early days as Zemmy has ...

  • Doc Daneeka & Abigail Wyles – Tobyjug
Visit Indie Shuffle to download. Sounds like: Doc Daneeka, Dido, Abigail Wyles Song: Doc Daneeka & Abigail Wyles - Tobyjug [download here ] What's so good? Doc Daneeka is usually known for his hard hitting, usually instrumental, UK-funky tinged tracks. So what’s this collaboration with the beautifully voiced Abigail Wyles all about? XLR8R explains: “Without question, “Toby Jug” is a bit of an unexpected curveball. It’s a puzzling selection, although that doesn’t mean the track isn’t any good. On the contrary, it’s a well-crafted piece of downtempo electronic pop, a production that’s actually quite minimal. “Toby Jug” accompanies her melodically soulful pipes with little more than a simple piano melody and some stripped-down, R&B-flavored; percussion. In the wrong hands, a song like this could be absolutely dreadful, a sub-Dido number suitable for the kinds of chillout compilations that soundtrack high-end day spas. But Doc Daneeka smartly avoids any potential cliches, and simply allows the song to breathe while Wyles commands center stage.” ------------------------ 1. • School Of Seven Bells: Ghostory
School Of Seven Bells Ghostory Vagrant Records [2012] Fire Note Says: School Of Seven Bells once again refine their sound - now as a duo. Album Review: After the surprising departure of twin sister Claudia Deheza from the band in late 2010 it was anyone's guess what was next for School Of Seven Bells. Well, the wait is over as their third LP Ghostory now represents the duo of remaining members, Alejandra Deheza and Ben Curtis, in a well streamlined and focused place. The band was already moving into a direction of shorter songs and less atmosphere but now the ...

  • Event Review: Silent Opera - La Boheme [VAUL ..
La Bohème by Silent Opera at VAULT (24 Feb '12, Waterloo) // Words: Gabriella Shimeld-Fenn At a silent disco, revellers hear the music via individual wireless headphones. The idea of transferring this concept for use in live theatre performances seems so obvious once you think about it, but it seems that Silent Opera have been the first to catch onto the potential in this method for the more immersive and site-specific productions, like their promenade La Bohème at VAULT Festival . Having received huge plaudits for their 'Dido & Aeneas' in a similar space during the Old Vic New Voices’ Coming Up Festival in 2011, I went into this show with high expectations and was not disappointed. Starting off with the audience sitting in the loft-style scruffy student studio apartment shared by the four male protagonists, this production felt more like a bunch of mates getting together to chew the fat and bitch about their lives; the singing helped to feel less incongruous by director Daisy Evans ’ modernisation of the ...

  • Feature: Noise Pop 2012
by Ze Pequeno • February 2012 About 20 years ago, some people decided it was a good idea to boost concert-going in San Francisco and, possibly taking a cue from the International Pop Underground Convention some time prior, focus primarily on lesser-known styles of music. The subsequently-named Noise Pop Festival has since survived mayors with awful hair, too many suicides, too many good clubs being closed down for one reason or another, and this band essentially playing every year until they broke up . Which is to say 10 times. Now, they serve as the lead-in for tours that usually involve Austin ...

  • Frank Skinner: The Brits isn't as good as it ..
Frank Skinner wasn't impressed with the Brits : "The Brits used to be this massively controversial thing with people taking trousers down and someone throwing water over John Prescott," he told That Sunday Night Show. "It has gone really downhill now." Yes, it used to be massively controversial. When exactly did the rot set in? Some might say 2002 was a key point in the turning of the event into a prepackaged drudgeathon. That year Dido won prizes; Sting performed and Travis was lauded. And who was presenting the show that night? Erm... that would be the same Frank Skinner ...
