  • Stream Laura Gibson's La Grande in Full
[mp3] Laura Gibson: "La Grande"  Long has Laura Gibson been the purveyor of hushed folk melodies imbued with a distinct poignancy and maturity that set her apart from her peers. Gibson does not deviate from this formula on her new record for Barsuk, La Grande , that comes out next week (1/24). There's a stillness to these songs, that makes the record accessible only to those with the patience to actually listen. While that may not garner much attention in the world of 30 second streaming sound bites, well rewarded are the consumers that choose to sit with this ...

  • Laura Gibson x Dear Reader
Personality Clash - the place where friendships are fostered, partnerships are launched and collaborations founded. We pit two artists against one another, allowing the creative sparks to fly. This time round, ClashMusic opted for two City Slang label mates... In the red corner: Laura Gibson. Based in Portland, Laura Gibson fuses her gentle, folksy charm with a knowledge of the Old West on her new album 'La Grande'. Recorded in her own studio, the album is a mark of Gibson's continuing artistic independence. In the blue corner: Dear Reader. Real name Cheri MacNeil, Dear Reader's new album 'Idealistic Animals ...

  • Dear Reader: Monkey Fun (audio)
I think we’ve covered before how I will pretty much listen to anything with monkey in the title, so thank goodness that Dear Reader’s specially recorded (and quite hidden) acoustic version of ‘Monkey (Go Home Now)’ is damn good. It’s just singer / songwriter Cheri MacNeil at the piano with some added harmonies, and it works wonderfully. If you like it, the creature themed album ‘Idealistic Animals’ is out Jan 23rd. Actually, we could probably drop the original in as well.   MONKEY (Go Home Now) by cityslang Story originally posted on SupaJam .

  • Stream: Dear Reader - Idealistic Animals
Religion isn't just something you sign up to then forget all about. For believers, it's something that occupies every facet of your life. A committed Christian, Cheri MacNeil pushed harder and harder with her own beliefs. At the start of her twenties, the songwriter was something close to a fanatic. Yet, somehow, doubts remained. Slowing crumbling away, Cheri MacNeil found her religious beliefs tumbling to the ground. Shaken to her core, the songwriter found solace in music and began shaping her thoughts. What follows is a remarkable record. Recorded under her pseudonym of Dear Reader , 'Idealistic Animals' is ...

  • Album | Dear Reader – Idealistic Animals
Hands up, who amongst us can name a South African band making waves in the indie scene? You? Me? No, didn’t think so. It might feel awfully lonely standing in a crowd of one, where the association of yourself with an entire nation can change the faces of your fans into a mirror; everything becomes [...] ( Read more... ) Categories: Records Tags: Dear Reader

The overriding impression left by Cheri MacNeil’s latest record is that she’s created a sprawling web of allegories to skirt around any uncertainty she’s not yet willing to address on acetate. Read the full story on DrownedinSound.com

  • Dear Reader Single Update
Dear Reader will release her new single 'Monkey (You Can Go Home)' on January 23rd. Real name Cheri MacNeil, Dear Reader was brought up to view life in a certain way. Engaged with Christianity, the songwriter's faith began to collapse recently - a metaphysical event that shifted the way she approaches life. Fuelling her really-rather-good new album 'Idealistic Animals' the singer is set to return to these shores for a one off show later this month. Taking place on January 16th, Dear Reader will launch her new album as part of a joint show with fellow City Slang signing Laura ...

The Sounds of 2012 by Cara Giaimo the latest EP: Nightosphere You Can Be A Wesley - Old In Florida MUSIC THAT COUNTS - We all know BU is a great school – it’s earned three whole T stops on the Green Line after all – but did you realize that it instills in its students not only knowledge and a love of learning, but also impeccable indie pop songcraft and mad guitar chops? Either that, or the four BU grads that make up You Can Be A Wesley are anomalies. Regardless, Bostonians should be proud that grabbing tickets to see YCBW tonight ...

  • Acoustic Instincts. Laura Gibson, La Grande ..
Two ladies of Oregonian and South African descents respectively, two acoustic guitars, one Berlin-based label , and one day upon which two toe-warming records are outed. Hardly The Twelve Days of Christmas, although that aforementioned day has finally dawned as the latest efforts from Laura Gibson  and Dear Reader have eventually emerged like newborns wriggling free from cocoon-like blanket, bathed in daylight for the very first time. Indeed both La Grande and Idealistic Animals add some vivacious flicker to the slow-roasting embers of the New Year as Gibson and Cheri MacNeil masterfully entangle tales both cautionary and cutesy with staccato twangs ...
