  • Download: Skysaw, ‘No One Can Tell’
Skysaw, a band formerly known as This, is the latest vehicle for ex-Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Chamberlin, plus cohorts Mike Reina and Anthony Pirog, will be augmented by Paul Wood and Boris Skalsky of NYC indie rockers Dead Heart Bloom on upcoming live dates. Skysaw’s debut album “Great Civilizations” will be with us in [...]

  • My "I Hesitate to Pick a Favorite" 2010 Top- ..
Better late than never, right?      2010 was a good yet weird year for music. I loved a lot of stuff but there wasn't any one album that stood head and shoulders above the rest. There are a number that vie for most-listened-to-in-their-entirety, however, and those are the ones that made this list.      One thing they all have in common is that there aren't any (well, not many) over-the-top woe-is-me type songs. There are sad ones, of course, a certain amount of melancholy is practically a requirement for me to love a song, but none of these are slit-your-wrist ...

  • Dead Heart Bloom: Strange Waves
Dead Heart Bloom Strange Waves KEI Records [2010] Fire Note Says: Dead Heart Bloom continue to evolve their sound! Album Review: Dead Heart Bloom has evolved a long way since the days founder Boris Skalsky recorded their early records using 2 inch tape and musically keeping things more acoustic. It was not until their 2008 EP series that Dead Heart Bloom expanded into a full band and ventured outside of Skalsky's early beginnings. This sets the path for the bands third LP, Strange Waves , as it builds on the power of a true band vibe and incorporates their past ...

  • I'm Feeling Strange Waves
In a recent post , I wrote about the importance of being kind to yourself and this album was part of the inspiration for that recommendation. There's a kindness to this record, a sense of comfort and self-forgiveness even as he admits all his mistakes, recounts his losses and remembers painful times. I can't stop listening to it, from start to finish.      Dead Heart Bloom is a foursome from New York City, led by Boris Skalsky. Strange Waves , which came out in August, is gorgeous. Sometimes it almost sounds like a hymn, like on "Meet Me" and "Fall," and ...

  • Someday Will Not Come Again
The first thing I did when I got home was download the new Dead Heart Bloom album, Strange Waves. The 9 track record takes you on a dreamy guitar driven ambient-folk carpet ride that I never want to end.  I could sit and read the lyrics like poetry. A definite progression in their music and [...]

  • DEAD HEART BLOOM-Strange Waves
Dead Heart Bloom are understated. That’s their biggest problem. Their songs, almost all of them, start with a slow quiet roll, burst into chorus, and then roll back. It’s the format pioneered by the Pixies, but without the punk energy. Instead, the choruses are poppy, almost sunny. Almost. There’s an undercurrent of sadness that permeates [...]

  • Must I
So ever since I first listened to Dead Heart Bloom I have pretty much fallen head over heals in love with their music. I want to give the whole band a big hug, scream their name from the top of a mountain so everyone knows just how awesome they are. It only takes one listen [...]

  • Snow Mix, By Popular Demand
I mentioned the other day that I "had" to make a mixtape because I lost a bet and I put up a few songs from it. After thinking about it (and asking a few friends), I decided to go ahead and post the whole thing. So here it is in its entirety. I call it "Snow Mix." How original is that? It's not got much to do with snow, actually, but I didn't know what else to call it! The Sweet Serenades -- "Mona Lee" mp3 off Balcony Cigarettes ( buy ) The Long Winters -- "Hindsight" mp3 off Putting the Days ...

  • Dead and Divine – The Machines We Are
There is a sickening trend in the Canadian music industry, where a band who’s sound is played out, and growing tiresome, use their success to go out, start a label and sign equally untalented sound-a-likes and shove them down the thoughts of those who for one reason or another still rely on the radio [...] Related posts: Wave Machines – If You’re Really There Review I was introduced to Wave Machines after checking out... To me, making a tape is like writing a letter — there’s a lot of erasing and rethinking and starting again. A good compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do.
